Thread: Mutants

    Default Mutants

    Hi,

I recognized that more and more photos of mutants are popping up. Seems that they are not so rare anymore!? I am curious if they are all coming from the same breeder or are there already several breeders who are producing mutants?

    kind regards,
    Martin

Do you mean mutants as in deformities in frogs? If that is what you mean then it is most likely from inbreeding to many times. The only way that we can try to prevent them is getting more wild frogs and then captive breeding them to get a better genetic variation.

nope, I am talking about the colour variations which are called mutant:

IMHO, inbreeding is in most cases just an easy excuse trying to justify more wild caught frogs. But this is another topic.

Oh, I see what you mean, there are more popping up because we are learning about genetics and color mutations more and more with the new tech that we have. These are still genetic mutations, but most of the time they are not harmful.

They are not coming from the same breeder and that is helping bring the price down... but still very costly compared to normals .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

I agree, at this point you will probably have more luck getting a mutation like that through breeding and using it to get the colors you want

Idk if they are all coming from different breeders, but I know one specific breeder is producing LOTS of them. And I do believe they have come down in price since he has.

Its my understanding that mutants only come from breeding's with samurai blue line frogs involved.

Yep, they all coming from a one breeder, the weirdest frogs you can come by. He is working with them for 2 years I believe.

And yes I'm talking about the same guy as you all do lol
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!

Does anybody know when the first mutant was produced / popped up? Was it in 2011 or earlier?

That may be a question only Yusuki can answer. Nuance produced the blues(which I know you know) but since the blues started spawning random mutants so have Samurai Lime Green Albinos and occationally the Peppermint Line does too. I'm not sure when the first mutant was produced.

Are you thinking of buying a mutant or do you not like that they are a bit more abundant than in past years?

nope, I am just curious and want to understand mutants better.
When did the first pop up? Can they pop up in every "line" or only in specific? Why are some mutants showing that they are mutants already as tadpoles and others start to change when they are already ab bit larger. Why are there only so few photos of adult mutants. Why are all mutants looking differently and none looks like another? What happens when you breed a mutant to a mutant? Is it genetic? ....

It is definitely genetic. I would guess that during developement when their DNA is forming that there is a mutated gene or protein that is present for those that are already mutants as tadpoles. Those that change later probably have this mutated gene laying dormant and s they grow something causes it to activate.

As for why they loom different from one another would have to do with variation in chromosome pairing. Think about how you ressemble your parents or a sibling yet you are not exactly alike. The frogs don't look exactly like their parents or siblings either though the differences are usually very minute and subtle. I would assume that these variations in appearance just become severely drastic in those with the mutated gene. I don't know enough about genetics to really provide a concrete answer for this phenomenon.

The lack of photos of adult mutants could be from premature death. Since little is understood about their mutation there could bad mutations hidden in their genes as well causing weakened immune system or maybe even one that halts developement early which would greatly reduce the life span of the frog. There just isn't enough information on them.

I believe there is a potential for mutation in all frogs. I guess the first mutant to exist would have to be the first albino that Kim Thomas produced, but thats a different mutation all together.
