Hello! My husband and I moved to central FL (Atlantic side) this past spring. We have a garage with an automatic door which we generally keep closed. Lately, there are two toads who hop into the garage the minute they hear the door open and they instantly proceed to hide in a hole in the garage wall, in a corner, right next to the door. Sometimes two toads go in the hole at the same time and sometimes only one comes in. I have been forcing them outside (gently) each time I spot them, as I fear they will be trapped inside the garage and die. No water source, not enough bugs, etc. The hole is small and set inside concrete on top of a small pipe. But I don't notice condensation on the pipe. It occurred to me just now that perhaps they are trying to hibernate? There is a small place underneath the garage door where they might could squeeze out, if need be. However, if it's so easy to get in and out from under the door, why do they wait to hop in only when the garage door opens?

I don't want the toads to be trapped to die. I also don't want to prevent them from a good hibernation spot. Should I continue to force them outside or leave them alone?

Thanks! I'm sure you are right! I spoke with some neighbors last night and they assured me the toads are fine. They've had them, too. I will take your suggestion, however, and leave a bowl of water. I'll keep it fresh, too.

Hello and welcome to FF! If leaving water for toads, the container need to be slightly bigger than toads themselves. Water should be tap dechlorinated with any plain aquarium dechlorinator like Seachem Prime. Good luck !
