    Default Hello Need Help

Hi today I went hiking and found 3 frogs and took them home and are in a temporary cage and I am wondering what these frogs are or what they eat and if they have any problems or issues. Here is a video of the frogs.

    Hello. Welcome to the Forum.

Where in the United States do you live?

The frogs look like Pacific Chorus Frogs. Check out the Care Article on Pacific Chorus Frogs on the left navigation column. It has alot of helpful information on these frogs, as well as photos to compare to the frogs you have found.

I live in Burbank California and I was hiking and saw them in the grass with very little mud. Hopefully I can take care of them perfectly

Yes, they are Pacific Chorus Frogs. Vey nice and chubby looking too. We have an excellent care article available to read and several members including myself and Paul (NW Amphibian Rescue) have had experience with them. These frogs are very hardy and easy to care for. They love to eat and handle stress well. If you have a male (or two or three!), they will entertain you with their calls which can be quite endearing. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your new additions.

Personally, I only use plastic cages as quarantine tanks until I can move them to a permanent glass enclosure. I just find glass easier to clean and provides a better view of my frogs. However, I am sure other members have and do use plastic. These frogs do like a fair amount of room, though. My one male, Yoki, is in a bachelor pad 5 gallon Exo-Terra. I plan on getting more PCF donw the road and I will have a 25 gallon tank set up with live plants, an indoor pool and driftwood. For three frogs, I would not have them in anything smaller than a 10 or 15 gallon as these guys do move around a bit and need to have a fairly good size pool to soak in every night. Your plastic cage would be good for the time being just to keep them in a smaller area to observe eating habits and overall health but I would upgrade if you can.

Male and females are very easy to tell apart. Males will have a dark, wrinkly throat (their vocal sac) while females have a white, smooth throat. As well, if you hear calling, it is definitely a male! Yoki calls throughout the day and night, but his favourite time is between 5 and 6 AM.

I have never fed Yoki worms, but as long as they were an appropriate size, I don't see why not. Worms are very high in protein. Crickets are the staple, and I give an occassional mealworm as a treat. PCF love to eat, so space out their feedings a bit. Yoki has quite the little Buddha belly and he gets fed every two-three days. Do you have calcium powder? If not, it would be a good idea to pick some up and dust the crickets you give your frogs.

Well, your dad is half right. Wild caught frogs often have gastrointestinal parasites. They can be treated with a trip to the vet. Not to worry, unless your eating their feces or not washing your after handling them, you will not become infected.

Today I went got red meal worms(The small ones were all dead) so I brought it home and put two and they won't eat it. Even if its right in front and they see it. Maybe they aren't hungry? How often should I feed them and will they eventually eat the mealworm?

You can also try some crickets. Frog see their food by motion, so if the meal worms aren't moving, they really can't see them. Crickets move around a lot more and might stimulate them to start eating.

I just watched your video. Those are great looking frogs. If someone else hasn't already suggested it, I'd put at least an inch of damp leaf litter and a few larger leaves on top to give them plenty of hide spots. They should also have a dish of water (careful with tap water) to soak in.

Also, if there is a Petco in your area, they are having a $1 per gallon sale on aquariums starting next weekend. So, you could get a nice aquarium without spending a fortune.

Hello, welcome to the forum. Frogs tend to eat things that give them alot of movement. The more they move, the more interested the frogs will be. Plastic containers are not the best thing to keep frogs in as to it does not keep any form of heat inside.

If I were you I would pick up a 20 TALL gallon from the petstore and set it up with some nice dirt. If not use peat moss. Make sure whatever you use is "natural" no fertilizers, pesticides, or any additives. On top of that dirt, put in a thin layer of dried leaves. I think "josh's frog" carries leaves(clean, and good), if not just go outside grab a ton of leaves. Put em in a bucket, rinse em a nd leave em in hot water for 30minutes. Hot water(boiling) kills parasite and germs. Decorate the tank with lots of branches and other climbing things. Drift wood is a good NON-rotting "branch", they sell them and are very good for terrariums/aquariums. Feed items that are not bigger than the mouth. So smaller items are better when it comes to worms. Try finding for sale wax worms and red wrigglers. Put em in a dish and let them go at it when they want em. Again I wouldnt depend on the worms, try crickets first. After a few months it may take on to worms. If so, what I do is I get a plastic bag and I put the worms in there and the worms start secreting a mucus which sticks to the powder. Which then holds more powder on them than crickets. So one or two of these powder is good for a week. Remember to keep a 3inch deep dish for the frogs to soak in if they want to. Spritz the tank daily or whenever.

If you go away, just keep the frogs near a warm area with lights off. Full dish. HEAVILY spray the tank the day before and the day you leave. Make sure these frogs have hiding places.

Oh wait these are chorus frogs. Lol'd I thought they ment tree frogs. Well thing still applies. Just dont put as much branches I guess, and more hiding places. xD

Nope, they won't. Not to sound mean to amphibians. But for the most part most amphibians are generally "dim-witted". They mainly go by hard core instincts. No feelings, thoughts, etc. Even if we want to see them to have emotions(personally Iam one of those people who deep downs believes they probably do have emotions) they dont. What Iam trying to say is, your frog isnt being picky because he doesnt like it or whatever. ITs more of HE has to see it MOVE, even if it was alive and it was just sitting there like a rock it would not eat it. Its not that it eats alive, its more of movement. There is a dish that supposedly promotes movement but here is the cons:
    1)Scares the frogs.
    2)overly priced
    3)Loud
    4)Dangerous---perhaps.

Some people h ave tried tweeziers---but these people are hard core pros.
Stick to live crawling insects. You can feed it:
    1)crickets-staple diet
2)Roaches-Smaller ones provide a better nutrition than the crickets, but are gross. Lol'd
3)Red wriggler high protein and low fat. I still wouldnt use this as a staple diet. Things like toads, pixies and etc benefit more from this than a chorus frog, because the said toads/frogs are fat as heck and lazy. While chorus frogs are active and picky eaters. Btw, never attempt to feed mice--- I have a friend who was foolish enough to try to feed a mouse to his whites(the treefrog is big), the mouse bit the treefrog in the leg. Don't leave crickets more than an hour in the tank with the frogs. Crickets CAN and WILL bite the frog. They are stupid cannibalistic creatures. So yeah watch out for that.
