Eli has given you good info on the WTF. But as for the “calling” part, females will make noise, it sounds more like a duck feeding call and their throat sack does not extend and is white, not dark like the males are. They also do this when extremely irritated. Shad does it when one of the boys crawls over her, she's a real hoot.
