    Default Aquascape

    Hi,

im thinking of making an aquascape. I will make it like a mountain range with a carpet of dwarf baby tears. What substrate should i use and what type of lighting would i need. Any tips on how to make one, and what equipment should i get? Im hoping the aquascape will be for white cloud mountain minnows

Dwarf baby tears (hermanthius callicothoides ) will require high lighting (t5ho minimum) and co2 supplementation to grow like the scapes you probably have seen online.

Substrate, you will need dedicated planted tank substrate like fluorite, or one of the ADA substrates. Also you will need dry fertilizers to fertilize the tank. Liquids can be used, but dry ferts are more economical.

And most of all, you need a LOT of patience and skill. I kept planted aquariums for about 7 years before I converted to frogs and I will tell you now, it is NOT a cheap hobby. Not trying to talk you out of it, just want you to be prepared.

Yes, they will co habitate, but the Goldie will eat your plants. Carp are vegetarians by nature and will destroy a planted aquarium.

To be honest, the perfect scape for white clouds is some large rocks and a pebble substrate. Keep in mind, they come from rocky, cold water streams in china. But they would be fine in what you are describing. White clouds are one of my favorite fish and kept them for a long time.

This was the tank I last kept white clouds in a few years ago. This was after a trim, if I recall.

I can start making the tank next week if i do it like this. How woukd i cycle the tank? My filter has been running for almost two weeks in my gokdie tank so it should almost be done, but he has ich but im treating it .

There are numerous ways to cycle a tank. They all take about 6 weeks. I'll find a decent write up a buddy of mine on another forum did. It is an excellent article. Just keep in mind that cycling is not something you want to rush. It takes a minimum of 6 weeks to fully cycle and about 6 months for the tank to mature. After it is cycled, add fish in small quantities. You don't want to put more than 6-8 in a 30g. The reason for adding them in small quantities is to prevent overloading the bio filter which would give birth to a bloom of diatoms, which looks like a nasty, hairy brown algae.

Come to think of it, look in the aquatic frog section. I think there is a good article on cycling the tank in there.

Just keep in mind that when the goldfish gets large, he may start bullying the white clouds. So keep an eye on that.

Im thinking of having it like this:

get some pebbles and small rocks
put large ones in the middle and go to smaller ones.
have gravel as substrate with randim little pebbles in it.
Large plastic plant in the middle of large pebbles as a centre piece.
