I'd rather a vet just say they don't know how to treat amphibians than try to treat an animal they know nothing about without letting you know they aren't qualified to do exotics; seen some real horror stories about situations like that. I had a really great vet in my home town who would help out with reptiles since there was no other local option, but he made it clear that he wasn't an exotics vet, so you knew what you were dealing with.

So Blob is less than happy about all of this. I have never really handled him much before this because pacman frogs are burrowers and I usually leave him alone other than to clean his tank. Will he get used to being held? He is so wiggly and pees everywhere, but I can't avoid picking him up because I need to give him medicine. I feel so bad stressing him out![]()
They don't ever get to where they particularly 'enjoy' being held, but they get used to it where it doesn't stress them out terribly. The best thing about animals without object permanence is they don't remember you were there once you're out of their sight though, so he probably doesn't stay that stressed for very long![]()

Thats good to know. I just gave him his medicine tonight by myself and he did seem to be less squirmy and didn't pee. Maybe he didn't like my boyfriend being around yesterday lol (he was the one helping me give his medicine). He also opened his mouth right up for the syringe this time. I think he is starting to feel better because I finally got him to eat a small piece of cut up night crawler tonight, he hasn't eaten since early last week, I'm really happy about that![]()
Sorry if I am being obnoxious with these updates...
So Blob seems to be having trouble eating. I have only been able to get him to eat two small cut up pieces of night crawler, one on Sunday and one today. He had to be assisted with it, like I had to put the night crawler right in front of his mouth because he kept opening his mouth and snapping but not lunging for it. After eating one small piece he refused anymore and would push away the rest with his front foot or turn away and burrow deeper in the substrate so I would leave him alone.
I called the vet today and told them what was going on, they said because he was still early on his course of antibiotics they didn't need to see him in there yet, but did want to put him on a prescription liquid diet for a week or so. I am going to pick up the prescription tonight, so we will see how he does on it.
Everyone send good healthy froggy vibes to Blob so he gets better soon!!
If antibiotics affect his digestion like they do mine; totally understand his behavior and feel sorry for Blob!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
just want to say, you are certainly not being obnoxious by providing updates. the more updates, the better, and good, solid, well documented experiences like yours and blobs are exactly the way we learn about our beloved slimeballs. I for one thank you. more updates from everyone who makes a thread would be marvelous.
Not trying to make anyone panic, but they do remember very well. Any of mine that I've had to force feed or give injections to remember. If they see me with a plastic spoon and a feeding syringe they blow up like a balloon. They also remember the sound of me flicking the air to the top of a syringe. I do not fully know the extent of their memories, but they remember stressful situations because it relates to their survival instincts. They do tend to know who feeds them too.
yeah lol they seem to know what medicine is i dewormed mine before and she was extremely mad at me turns out she didn't have parasites but some darn fruit flys got into her stool and made maggots . it was one of only 2 time she ever bit me she knew what it was the second dose lol!
If you're iffy on whether or not to use a feeder, don't use it. They're comparatively cheap compared to your frog getting sick from potentially harmful food.
Mine definitely recognizes me as opposed to someone else, and remembers situations, but if something moves out of her field of vision, you can tell she is immediately confused by it... Kind of how babies think you've disappeared if you cover their eyes. I wonder how you'd describe their long-term memories, like people and equipment; I know they recognize it, but I get the feeling it's probably more of an associative thing like "Spoon=Fear" rather than them actually recalling a memory.

That is true, feeder insects and worms aren't expensive so throwing out a container isn't a loss for me. I'd rather do that than harm my little guy.
I did not know that about the worm containers though, I use them up pretty quickly though. I will be more aware and check each time before I feed him from now on.
Yea frogs have to have some kind of long term memories, or else they wouldn't remember that a moving cricket/worm/bug = food. Or with my frog, he sees my red tongs when I am placing his food down and sometimes opens his mouth wide. Does anyone elses frog do that?
