1 ID and 1 ?

Planted some fern "seeds" about a month ago. I'm assuming it's not a real fern because ferns do not grow from seeds. Possibly a species of asparagus fern?



Any ideas what is going on with my rabbits foot fern? It was doing excellent and even had new growth, now the leaves are turning black. Too much water? I have it mounted on the background with lfs.

Yes, too much moisture on the leaves.

I have no idea what that stem is Amy, we'll have to see what it grows into. I doubt it's a fern though. On average though, fern spores take a few months to germinate and become new plants.

It did take just over a month to germinate and the other two seeds haven't done anything at all yet. Could it be the seeds from the berries of an asparagus fern? It said something like "jurassic fern" on the package. I guess I will find out! Once it finally germinated, it went from nothing to about 3 inches in less than a week. They were free and something to play around with LOL

They were actual seeds?? Because ferns reproduce via spores. Those funny looking brown bumps on the undersides of some of the fronds.

It is possible about the berries. The plumosa is a very odd one compared to other ferns. But we can speculate all day, let's just wait and see what she grows into, shall we

In all actuality, it's probably not a fern at all, but a plant that resembles a fern.

Yes, I knew it couldn't be a true fern because they grow from spores. I don't think asparagus fern is technically a true fern though, is it? They were seeds, small, brown, round seeds. The instructions said to soak them overnight and they would germinate after about a month. It really could be anything, and like you said, it will take more time to tell

OH! I will try to remember later, I wanted to share some pics of my hardy hibiscus. It went into bloom this week. I hope the cold doesn't destroy them right away!

Well, ferns did reproduce via seeds millions of years ago. Unfortunately, those are all extinct.

It depends in what your version of an asparagus fern is. I have seen about 7 different cultivars/species of the "asparagus fern"

I am not sure, I have only grown sprengeri before and propagated them from division. I stopped keeping them several years ago because my cat (who passed a couple months ago) was always trying to eat it. I would keep it in the hall, where he wasn't allowed, and he'd still bolt out the door to try to get to it. I know the berries are poisonous, so I never wanted to risk it.

Here are a couple pictures of my Hardy Hibiscus "Midnight Marvel." These can grow in Wisconsin, so long as they are protected. It's planted on the south side of the house, right alongside the house, where the soil stays the warmest. Mulch helps to keep it protected also. Blossoms are about 8 inches across.
