    Default Why burrow ?

    Hi Guys:

I have a question. If in nature/the wild, African Bullfrogs spend months buried during the dry season, and emerge only during the rains to breed, etc.........why is it that I hear most individuals AB's still bury themselves when both temperature and humidity are controlled. You would would think that if both these factors are controlled and optimum that they would stay more aquatic. As I have posted in the past My AB seems to prefer the water and is in it 95% of the time...................just trying to better understand the animal to better care for it.

And here's a spanner in the works, of all the times that I have found Bullfrogs here in South Africa it has been after 50mm of rain or more in one day. A friend of mine has confirmed the same thing. Generally I think most of the time they will spend underground or at least buried and emerge at night, purely because they such large animals that they would be sitting ducks for predators. Of all the Bullfrogs that I have found have been away from water holes, and were walking in streets with the nearest water hole at least 1km away.

I have a new spot to find bullfrogs in the rainy season, so I hope this spot will be a better observation point than my one from previous years and will hopefully be able to give you some more feedback on this in September onwards.
