Thread: I just obtained some baby white's

Default I just obtained some baby white's

I was on a road trip and decided to stop at a Petco for a yellow or brown mouse. I didn't find a mouse but I did find some baby whites labeled "Australian White's Treefrogs". Mine is Indonesian and an adult so I thought it might be a good learning experience to get a few. I haven't noticed a lot of difference in the color yet though. (One of them is very hyper though. He will probably go nuts when he's old enough to be in the 33gallon.)

I put the two in a 10 gallon with some dirt and water dishes for now but I have a few questions.

How long will it take them to grow to fullsize?
How much do I feed them until then? Do I feed them once a week like my adult? I put about 20-30 of the smallest size of cricket in there because I wasn't sure when they had eaten last and when I returned almost all of them were gone.
Is there anything else I should know about young white's compared to the adult version? (Other then that I should not mix them until they are close in size unless I want one to become a snack?)

Young frogs need a constant supply of food. Just keep food in with them and as long as they are not getting overweight or lethargic you should be fine. Also, they are probably all Indonesian. The name magically changes to Australian as soon as they are imported because people are preferring to buy CB over WC. Indonesians are WC and Australians are CB. Most are Indonesian, so you really never know what you are getting and a fecal exam is in order for all new frogs.

I would but... I live in the middle of no where.

I'll just take their word for it and the fact that they have papers saying it was checked by a vet.

It's surprising how soon they can start eating medium/large size crickets. When I first bought the crickets for my first, I thought they were almost the same size. lol. So for a little bit I fed him one large cricket a day. Gradually worked up to two.

So cute Crystal6. CrazyAirborne is right that substrate will be irritating them. leaf litter or Moss will fix that.

    Hi Crystal!

I replied to your earlier post (about the chirping) and figured I would share my 'mothering' experience from last fall.

    Feeding:
When I got Igby/Kibbits last October, they were roughly 1" and 1.5" respectively. I fed them around 6 baby crickets each day. So great advice I received (and subsequently read on various forums) was to transition to larger crickets once the length of the frog's torso matched the length of about 1~1.5 cricket length. At first I asked the pet store to try to pick out some of the smaller "large" crickets and they were happy to comply. Once I started going to larger crickets (from the baby's), I transitioned from feeding them every day to every 2 to 3 days. It's now been almost a year, and I'd say they are about 2.5 to 3 inches long. Are your frogs close to the same size? That's one problem I did have (with Igby being bigger at first). I had to use a feeding tank at the beginning to make sure she didn't snag up all the crickets before Kibbits could have his fair share. ; )

    Substrate:
I have used a combination substrate and that's really been a great solution for me! I use a bottom layer of coconut bark (soft and bouncy for those diving leaps after food) and then top it off with a layer of Jungle Bed, Forest Blend. This helps fill in some of the holes in the coconut substrate, and make sure there isn't large chunks exposed for them to swallow (as well as limit the amount of crickets burrowing down!). Given their notoriously messy eating habits, I wanted to limit the amount of exposed coconut chunks for them to accidentally swallow as much as possible. Yes, they definitely will get messy, but as long as you have some fresh water available, to help clean up, they'll be happy. Granted, I sometimes have to change the water more than once a day (Kibbits loves to eat, wash off, and then eat again). I do have some moss in the tank around the water side to help keep the humidity up, but I found it hard to really clean thoroughly, so I tend to use it as an "addition" rather than a flooring, you know?

    Hope that helps!
