    Wink Newbie here!!

    Hi,

Just wanted to introduce myself and ask a question. I have always loved reptiles and amphibians and even though we do not have any in the house
now, I love to find them out in the yard. My question is: I have two large green tree frogs that made themselves a home in a piece of pottery on my patio.
They have been living their for the past 3 years or so. I love having them, but my mini schnauzer loves them more. I am very concerned that one night if
I am not fast enough she will tag it and kill it like the Florida anoles that she hunts.I want to know if anyone knows, if I move the pottery somewhere else in the yard
do the frogs tend to stay close to where their home is? or do you think that they will return to the patio? Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Welcome to the forum! The frogs probably go out to forage during the night. They may go out during the day as well but not as often. Its amazing that they have managed to be able to stay there for 3 years without moving elsewhere or being eaten. That is, if they are the same ones. So the answer to your question is: if they are in the pot when you move it then they will know where it is and where to find it. But that wont stop them from leaving to find food.

You could do a little social experiment. Try moving the pottery a few feet away every day. If they don't leave it then it means they made a home there and recognizes it as an official safe home. If they do leave it and return to your patio and never come back to the pottery then it means that your patio is their hunting ground and they're interested to stay in the patio more

Thank you both for your responses , I believe the larger of the two frogs has been the same frog for the past 3 yrs and the second one showed up this past spring. They both hide behind the pottery sundial that is hanging on the wall. It would be too hard to keep moving the sundial, as it's nailed on a stucco wall. I think that I will just move it into the garden area, should be lots of yummy bugs for them to eat and hopefully keep them happy enough so they wont want to come into the patio area again. There really is nothing to eat in the patio, they leaving this hiding place every evening to venture out to the back yard to eat, I am hoping that they will reestablish themselves in their new location.

If they have been there 3 years, I would just leave them. Frogs are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for. Seems like they found a nice place to sleep during the day, and they most assuredly know where to find food. I know this may sound cruel, but moving them to a new area where there may be predators you don't see, may cause their demise.

Just wanted to let you all know that I had no choice and had to relocate my frogs. Last night one of my schnauzers almost killed one of the frogs, so I relocated the the pottery piece that
was holding the frogs. What I did not know until I took the pottery piece down, was that it was holding six huge tree frogs. I just checked on them in the new location and they are starting to emerge out from under their hiding spot and are coming out to eat. I will know if my experiment worked tomorrow when I check on them. Wish me luck.

    Thanks

Not as well as I had hoped, only one frog returned to the pottery piece that they were all in when it was moved. Two of the frogs were found again on the patio looking for their home and the rest still have not been seen. I wished I had not had to move them, but it was a battle to keep my dogs from harming them. I am sure that they have found a new location somewhere on the property. We live off a pond, so I am sure that they are here somewhere.
