Even though I always play devil's advocate for multispecies tanks, I really do not recommend doing it. Besides having a proper set up, there is the potential for so many disasters, that I really don't think most of us amateurs should even attempt it. Having a large, single species enclosures opens up a world of design opportunities to observe our animals in as realistic environment as possible and allows the animals to display natural behaviors we can lose out on with a small enclosure, or even a large multispecies one for that matter.
