A pH of 6.8 is ideal. A pH below 6.4 or lower can be harmful, especially if kept at these levels for extended periods. While at the same time a pH above 7.0 can allow for the toxicty of ammonia. Below 7.0 ammonia become ammonium, a much less toxic substance.
