Designing the water section to be lengthwise versus cross sectioned is pretty much just a matter of aesthetics. It wouldn't be detrimental at all to divide the tank that way. Of course, going lengthwise had advantages, like being able to warm the plexi and curve it to give a more natural look to the enclosure.
