With a 12x12 or a 12x18 I would recommend dart frogs. Tree frogs would want a taller tank than an 18 will provide.

Good to know, now as far as temperature during the day and night as well as humidity, what are the proper readings for that? Before the frogs are added I'm going to do just plants for about a month or two so I can get a feel for what I'm getting into
Different frogs require different temps and humidity. I would recommend reading this article - Frog Forum - Choosing a Frog to help you get started. From there, I would read up on the different care sheets for frogs and decide what will work for youLast time I was choosing a new species, I spent hours and hours reading about different frogs. I ended up very very happy with my choice as a result.
