Questions about set up
I am setting up an Exo terra 12x12 or 12x18 in a few days and I want to know everything I will need to have success with keeping tropical plants as well as a dart frog or tree frog. My plan is to buy a mister as well as make a rainfall system but I am open to suggestions

I would go on the bigger size tank. If you want to go tree frogs, I'd get the 18x18x24. It's best to know what you're getting before you build so that you know what you're going to need.

With a 12x12 or a 12x18 I would recommend dart frogs. Tree frogs would want a taller tank than an 18 will provide.

Good to know, now as far as temperature during the day and night as well as humidity, what are the proper readings for that? Before the frogs are added I'm going to do just plants for about a month or two so I can get a feel for what I'm getting into

Different frogs require different temps and humidity. I would recommend reading this article - Frog Forum - Choosing a Frog to help you get started. From there, I would read up on the different care sheets for frogs and decide what will work for youLast time I was choosing a new species, I spent hours and hours reading about different frogs. I ended up very very happy with my choice as a result.

Lily gave you some great advice! Highly recommend you research the species you want to keep then design the tank with their care in mind.
Most dart frogs like it around 73f and 80 - 100% humidity
But more specific info can be found on care sheets.

My only concern with the dart frogs is the fruit flies as I would prefer to feed crickets

Fruit flies are cheaper, smell better, and more easily breed at home. I HATE dealing with crickets!!
