    Default Frogs to Gallons ratio

    Hey ya'll,

    I'm thinking about getting a frog (or frogs), and have a important question to ask before I do. I understand there is a general 10 gallon to 1 frog rule, but is this true for all frogs? My family used to have a 20g with 4 or 5 fire belly toads in it, which is one reason I ask. The tank I'm looking at is 30 gallons and 3 frogs just seems like so few for a tank of that size.

    Thanks,
    Russ

    Its a complicated issue. You cannot have less than ten gallons for any frog. But you can put up to two fire bellies in a ten gallon. This of course does not mean one csn fit in a five. In a thirty gallon, five or six fire bellies can be housed together. I had two toads in a 35 and they love the space so i wouldnt go with too many

    So you are saying there is a minimum size of 10g period, but once you get bigger than that you can have fewer gallons per frog?

    How many Tomato frogs or AGTFs would you recommend in a 30 gallon tank? (those and the firebellies are my options)

    AGTF's would need 10 gallons each, preferably in a vivarium at least 24 inches tall. I am not familiar with tomato frogs to know what kind of space they need.

    I know we need to have a guideline for the amount of frogs one can house in a given size tank, and the 10g/frog rul makes sense, but I think it is silly. A lot is really based on common sense. Simply because you can't use the 10g rule for terrestrial species because they won't use vertical spaces. Then there's the size differences. Obviously, you can house more AGTF in a 40g than you can white's tree frogs or retf's, due to the size of the frog.

    My recommendation to anyone. If you are a new frogger, just get one frog. Get used to caring for it and keeping it alive. You can always add more down the road. One or two is a good beginning number because if you start out with more, things can get very complicated, very fast and without warning. And then people are left with none. Sadly, it happens much too often.

    I agree with Bill. Some frogs require more space than other frogs because of their size. For example, would you keep a bullfrog or Goliath frog in a 10 gallon tank? They wouldn't be able to move in a tank that size. In the end it depends on what frog you get and how happy and healthy you want them to be

    To blatantly copy and paste from a response I gave recently. It fits this almost to the letter.

    <Begin Copy/paste>

    That is a common misunderstanding. The 10 gallon per frog is the recommended minimum amount of space not the exact amount of space each frog requires to be happy. A frog that could be happy in a minimum amount of space would be ecstatic in 30g or 150g.

    A few things to keep in mind and I will use this particular tank as an example. A 100g tank is roughly 72x18x19 Once you add a back ground, drainage layer, and Substrate you are left with 72x16x14. The remaining space is equal to 64-65gallons of space remaining. (That is assuming your frogs will use all the vertical space provided) So using the "Minimum Requirements" guide you could put 6.5 frogs in here, but assuming no one wants half a frog than you could put 6. BUT if you get frogs that are more terrestrial and less arboreal than you would need to do some different figuring. For Terrestrial frogs lets assume they would use 5" of vertical space (climbing over wood and such) your new tank dimensions as far as the frogs are conceded is 72x16x5 which equals 24-25gallons of space. Hopefully you can see how the choices we make not only in how we build our tanks, but also what frogs we decide to put in them will change the outcomes.

    p.s. The formula to figure out the volume of a container for US Gallons is Length x Width x Height (divided by) 231.

    Please consider the 10 gallon for what it is "A recommended Minimum" and NOT as the definitive amount of space each frog requires.

    Paul
