Fire belly toads and other frogs???

Now, i have had my FBTs for almost 3 years. I started researching about mixing FBTs with tree frogs, etc. and found out that people had mixed opinions. Some of the, said it was fine, they had kept fbts with green tree frogs for years. A lot of people also said it was bad to do this as FBTs release toxins into the water.


I need help from you guys to tell me if it is ok to mix a tree frog and my FBTs together as i really want a new frog that can go with them. I am only asking this because i am not allowed to get another viv for a tree frog (i have a huge mesh enclosure that i used to keep stick insects in but im jot allowed to use it ).


Also, i heard that green tree frogs are immne to fbt toxins.


I am also making a planted viv soon so if a tree frog can go in there i will mike it very leafy and sticky so it will stay in the "tree" bit and the fbts will stay in the water/ground layer.

It could work in a very very large vivarium with a lot of space for the arboreal tree frogs. How large is this enclosure? The rule of thumb is don't mix amphibian species, I happen to agree with it 99% of the time. Even if the vivarium is large, there is still direct contact and the transmission of disease is something to be concerned of.. I wouldn't do it.

The viv is 18x18x18 or 45cmx45cmx45cm

Even if the tree frogs are immune to firebelly toxins, which I doubt, though I've never done the research, I still would not mix them. You still have the issues of stress. Also, with no past experience with tree frogs, you're more likely to have an issue. You cannot be sure what is normal behavior in an environment of their own to know when an issue has arisen in a mixed environment.

I can also tell you that no matter how you create the tank...you can never tell the frog where it is going to stay. Especially with an 18x18x18...that's just not tall enough to keep them separated at all. Even if it was taller, I still wouldn't recommend it.

Nah, fish work. If you do partial water changes every week and have enough water volume the fish will be fine. I don't think FBT are so toxic they would cause much of an issue.

I think it will be ok, but if anything goes wrong, ill remove it straight away. If i clean the water every few days it should be fine, besides i will mist the tree frog bit so it can get water from there. I could even put one of those seed things you can get that looks like a coconut and ill put water in that for the tree frog

Mixing is not a good idea. One is a subtropical frog and the other is a temperate frog. Both have different care requirements. Mixing should only be done by people with massive amounts of experience , in a large enclosure that is properly designed. The problem you will have is with little experience you have with both species, how do you recognize there is going to be a problem BEFORE it happens.

Keep in mind, that when you come back here and say "the green tee frog in my fbt tank doesn't look good", the responses probably won't be ummmm.....kind lol

Good point lol. This is one of the problems with FBTs, you cant put other things with them like you can with lets say a green and grey tree frog

I think ill leave it then, also i was looking at dartfrogs for sale just to see what they look like (they look awsome lol) and i noticed the price for 1. Its like $50 which is like £40's! Why r they so expensive?

I was thinking the same thing... I wouldn't even mix a green tree frog with my greys. No reason for the added stress and possible health issues. Either rehome the firebellies to get something else if you can only have one tank, or wait until you can get another tank.

Ill keep the firebellies, whilst your here Bill, could you please explain to me why my fittonia red is turning white and some leaves look like they've been burnt. If this is a problem how would i fix it?

Supply and demand lol there are darts way more expensive than that. But here in the states, you can find some epidibates for about $20 US
