Seriously? You've never boiled a rock? None of your recipes call for a 1/2 of river pebbles? Lol. Seriously, you can boil rocks, but I just wash them real good with dawn dish soap (the real dawn, not just any dish soap) and then soak them in a bleach dip then I put them in a bowl of water and add some dechlorinator. That's it. Everybody has their own methods.

what about for a hygrometer? Any reliable ones that won't break the bank?
The ones they have at the pet store with the weight at the bottom are really the best ones. Any brand will do.

Can't answer you on this one. I haven't used hygrometers in a while. I'm able to just my conditions in the tank by my plants.
A good digital hygrometer is best though. Those analog ones are never accurate. I think I used the exoterra when I did use them.

does filtering it dechlorinate it? Otherwise no.... I do have a bottle of dechlorinator on it's way with the rest of the stuff I ordered, but as per pet store advice filtering was enough.
Filtering doesn't do anything. It doesn't remove chlorine or chloramines or any heavy metals. Seriously? This was a real pet store? Lol

ugh... well too late for the stuff already in the tank... hopefully no harm was done, and thankfully I will be rebuilding it soon. I do have an older bottle of Aqua Safe (I think it may have expired) that I used for my beta bowl. Is that the right stuff? I suppose I could reboil these things in water treated with some if I can make it to the pet store tonight.
Even expired, it may be better to use it than not.

it's like over a year expired... but hopefully I can find time to run to store because I really want to get that rock in there to put the thermo on at least asap.
ok, loaded up the kids and headed to the pet store against my better judgement (they try to run all over in there). Got some marine conditioner, hopefully that will work. It takes out the chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals, but it's also for aquariums obviously and I don't know if there is a major difference? Anyway, I also go a glass thermo.... do I suction to the glass and leave the tip near but not touching the bottom? Thanks again.
one thing specifically... this lists protective fish coating along with the elimination of chlorine and such, and non-foaming. Is that going to be an issue?
UGh and I may have just found my own answer... did a quick search and found this answer....
No, don't ever use a fish dechlorinator for frogs.
Most of the time it shouldn't make a difference, but some brands of fish dechlorinators contain a chemical that, while beneficial to fish, will make it difficult for frogs to shed. I did this with a White's tree frog once and it died because it couldn't shed properly, and so it also couldn't breathe as well, and then a bacterial infection got onto the messed up skin and that was that.
FML.... I just can't win lol.
Urg..... Dont get me started about pet stores and their advises........
As for a quick search and things like that.... Look how about you sit down, breath in and out like 100 times....
After you do that repeat it again! And as many times as needed.... Feeling better? Good!
after you feeling better you forget everything that pet store people told you. Done? Then lets move on. Take everything that you have set for your frog, that pretty looking moss too, put moist papertowels in, plants that you have, cork, for everything you put in use conditioned water or bottled spring water. Fish conditioners works just fine! Whatever you read is bs.
Oh and cover bigger part of that bowl with smth, anything not see through. Doesnt matter what, you can ducktape paper, whatever works.
Now you deserve some wine, but perhaps tequila would be more useful.
relax for today.

Well said!!!!

To add - there is a reason i suggest to use papertowels instead of moss, i think Carlos suggested same thing earlier.
it will help you keep things as clean as possible ( change papertowels every day) as well as monitor eating and pooping and if smth is off it'll help you react accordingly.
Forget about everything, sleep on it and tomorrow you can start setting up your cage. A frog in that bowl will be just fine for a few days or week if needed.
Personally i keep any new additions in quarantine for at least 2 months, they are here for 6-8 months if needed.

I just got done reading through the pinned water post on this forum.... looks like fish water conditioners CAN be ok, but not to use the ones that have additives for fish health which this one does.... so I will just not use it. I have some that will be here in a couple days.... I will just make sure to prepare everything with that when it gets here for the new build.
Why would I need to cover the bowl? Are you saying to take OUT the moss and put in paper towel? Sorry I am a little confused.
I see your post about the paper towels now... was posting at same time.
Dont be sorrythat is ok
yes that is what im saying, take moss out, wash the bowl with dechlorinated water. Or bottled spring water, the one you would drinkafter that put papertowels in, plant ( plastic, silk), cork that you rinse with the same water in.
Covering the bigger part of the bowl will minimize stress levels of the frogyou however would need some wine lol
can you post pic of the fish conditioner you bought or just write down the name.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!
Would it be ok to put the moss just for those few days, if I rinsed it in the treated water? I don't want to have to change the paper towels every day either since it would be tricky in that dish with the frog in there.... she likes to jump at me and try to get out.
The conditioner is Instant Ocean brand, Marine Conditioner. Then for the bullet points it says
1. Protective Fish Coating
2. Eliminates Chlorine, Chloramine, and heavy metals
3. non-foam formula
Your conditioner is just fine!
I very strongly suggest not to use moss now, not until you see frog eating and pooping properly.

Well, what you wrote here tells me that humidity gauge is not reading right. The whole top has to either be removed and a pane of glass used in it's place, or you can temporarily cover the whole thing (including vents in back) with kitchen plastic wrap (or similar plastic) using tape to attach it to screen top edges. Do not worry about ventilation, the air exchange will happen through the vents below door and along door gaps. There is no way you have the proper constant humidity in there with screen top being covered by light hood. Also, do not turn that light on until you are positive of temperature inside the enclosure. Anything above 80F could harm your frog.
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
