So back in July was when I first got Monster..a couple weeks later I got my second toad..my first female Mercy
(left monster, right mercy)
In their tank was 2 large rocks..one of these rocks had a large hole which I put towards the bottom to try and block access to it. One evening I got home from work and noticed Monster sitting in his usual spot on top of the rock..but Mercy was missing. She usually was very shy so I didn't think anything of it and got on my laptop. A few hours went by and I still noticed Mercy wasn't around so I began investigating. I started moving the rocks very gently around because I didn't want to squish her..but she still wasn't turning up. Finally I picked up the rock with the whole..and saw her body drop out with her eyes glazed over. I instantly broke down and started crying. My Mercy had drowned to death.
I didn't want to get another toad..but My Monster was so depressed..he wouldn't eat..wouldn't move much like he normally does. so in comes my other female..I also named her Mercy after the first one.
This is her most recent picture. When I first got her she was shy like the last one as well. But over time she has warmed up to me and is a lot more open.
And Monster is very happy to have her around..
I took the rock out and now they are not in a tank full of water like they used to be. Now they have more land than water, the way I wanted it to begin with.
I just wish I had known they could still get into it before this all happened![]()
Awe, I'm sorry. Most water areas have things to climb out on such as plants or a tall rock. A 1" water area is good bc it allows them to swim but yet stick their heads out when sitting on the bottom.
Your baby looks happy now. Glad you got him a friend. They are quite social.

Aww, I'm sorry for your loss
I owned nine toads and, while I had all of them named and could tell which was which if I looked at their markings, the large numbers made it difficult to keep track of all of them in a 55 gallon tank (especially with all the hides I provided them). It took me a week to realize I hadn't seen one of my favorite and most aggressive boys, Lloyd. I started searching and found him drowned under the water filter. It's unfortunately a common way for the toads to pass since FBTs usually have tanks with lots of water and it's their nature to explore and squeeze in tight hiding spots. So many contributing factors go into these things that I can tell you, you aren't to blame. Every pet owner goes through loss -- be it through age, accident or disease -- and things do happen. Judging by your passion, I'd say she lived a good life. Take care of your two. They're good pets.
sorry for you loss fire bellies like to get into small places under water![]()
