I had seven tadpoles. Unfortunately five of the seven, including the green frog tad which i had affectionately named "Scar" due to the large, you guessed it, scar along his side, died. Only two survived. I did notice that some sort of fungus had swept through the tank. Luckily, the two that didn't get infected made it to frog hood. They turned into cute little pickerel frogs! Of course (like every time i successfully raise a tad) I'm going on vacation on Sunday! And will not be back till saturday! (During which time i will be jet-lag cranky). Normally, this wouldn't be a problem. But with the fungus that infected the other tads (pretty sure not chytrid cause all the frogs in the lake are fine. None dead that I've found) should i release the two baby froglets?! I would HATE for them to die but hate even MORE for me to release some sort of pathogen into the lake. Help!

I wouldn't release them because of the fungus, whatever swept through sounds pretty serious and I wouldn't risk it if I were you is there anyone you know willing to look after the little guys while you're away? If anything I would try sprinkling a bunch of fruit flies in there while you're gone and hope the little guys make it ;(

That is a hard decision. I would also try hard to find someone to watch them. Good luck, Eli, and have a great vacation!

with the history behind them, i wouldn't release them unless i had them tested first. i would feed them heavy a few days before you leave and then dump a ridiculous amount of fruit flies in their enclosure before you leave. they should be alright. a week of them not eating every day shouldn't hurt them. remember, they wouldn't get guaranteed meals all seven days in the wild

Went to the pet store today. NO FRUITFLIES! None! Had to settle for the smallest crickets they had. The little pickerel froglets tore them apart. Tomorrow is when i leave so i will feed them before i go. I hope they make it.

Sounds like when I went to petco last week, they were out of every size crickets but the huge ones haha needless to say my frogs weren't very pleased.

Im back from my vacation. I had a great time except the hotel was horrible. My White's and Fowler's toads made it ok but unfortunately the pickerel froglets just couldnt pull through. It is sad but im glad that no diseases made their way out into the ecosystem

sorry to hear about the loss. yea unfortunately froglets are very susceptible to disease and there's high mortality, even in the wild. they also need to be fed regularly (they're growing and developing and needs nutrients/calories), more often than older frogs, much in the same way that babies need to be fed.
