I remember someone saying they cleaned their cricket container once a month. I have to clean my container every day. I usually have only 6 to 12 crickets in it at a time but it still will smell even with that few crickets. I can't imagine if you had hundreds or thousands. Barf!
I find adding some eco-earth or a similar substrate helps absorb the odor a bit.
I have paper towel on a bottom, im just changing it every few days.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!
Crickets do smell however a container should not have to be cleaned everyday especially with only 9 or so crickets as you say. Once those crickets are used up and you are replacing them is when you should clean the container. Other than that removing uneaten produce after 24 hours and making sure not to add too many water crystals (If you use them) as crickets can really soil them, make sure there is adequate ventilation, and perhaps use a substrate or paper towels as recommended by others then that small amount of crickets should do fine.
For those with hundreds of thousands of crickets I advise you to look into How Cricket & Roach Colony Cleaner Crews Work. When you raise crickets by the thousands you may see hundreds of deaths which can be a vector for contamination and messy smelling bins. The Colony Cleaner Crews Work by eating ONLY the dead crickets before they began to smell and become a sticky mess at the bottom of your bin. The Colony Cleaners Work by saving you time and effort.
