Planning on getting a Pixie

Hi, everyone!
I'm looking at getting my first frog. I've kind of fallen head over heels in love with Pixie frogs and want to make sure I do everything right.

I was chatting with a local gentleman who runs a really good reptile shop and said I would do really well getting a 20 long to keep a frog in. And to start a baby in a critter keeper until it gets a little bigger.

I'm just looking for more thoughts on housing, feeding, lighting, etc...

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

A small female Giant or Dwarfs will fit for life in a 20L; but a large Giant male won't and will eventually need a 40B or similar. Recommend start a Dubia roach culture and find a local source for not dyed night crawlers. You will need lots of food to raise a GABF to adult.

Glad to hear you're interested in a GABF! I bought a baby just over three months ago and he's very cool. I talk about him and his eating habits that my friends always ask how he's doing! lol

I would agree about starting out with a critter keeper, but you may have a difficult time getting it heated properly (heat mats aren't recommended for use on acrylic). I started my baby, Maasai, in a 10g tank it it worked well for us. I did sometimes have to spend a few minutes digging to find him at feeding time, but for the most part he was usually waiting for dinner.

After his expensive Petsmart water dish sprung a leak (grrr) I just ended up buying a shallow glass pyrex dish (I'm paranoid about chemicals leaching from plastic containers).

I HIGHLY recommend buying Canadian nightcrawlers from Walmart as a staple food. I wasn't ready to start a dubia colony, and nightcrawlers were an affordable alternative. You will have to cut them into bite sized pieces when he's small, but they are by far the easier, cheaper choice. They can be stored in the fridge for months. I offered crickets on occasion (which he absolutely loved), but I don't do it anymore because he can easily eat $10 worth of crickets within 3 minutes.

I just purchased a 20 long tank that he will get moved into in the near future. Keep in mind, they aren't real active so they don't utilize much space. My guy pretty much goes from his burrow to his water dish and back again. Sometime he sits on his little rock cave too. I would recommend buying some kind of hide like a hollow log or an aquarium cave decoration. They appreciate a place to quickly escape to.

I actually do work for PETsMART, so I already have a small list of things I want to pick up from work. I'm getting my 20L from a friend who's redoing her reptile tanks, and right now, its extra for her.

That and I live right by Houston, TX. And I'm not one of the psyho Texans that runs the AC at 70 when its 95-100 out. Heat in Texas is easy to come by, but I will make sure my frog has the heat he needs
