So I've had my dubia roach colony for a couple months now and I'd say everything is going good. I just have a few questions:
I keep mine in a big storage container. When I clean it I dump everything that's on the bottom into a dish and then I basically pick out all the roaches that didn't climb on the egg crates. It's fine for the big ones but the babies are a different story. How does everyone else do it?
I'm starting to make my own roach chow but I'm not sure what to make the staple ingredient.....I have unmedicated chicken feed, whole oatmeal or cheerios... Or possibly I'm missing something? I feed fresh veggies and some fruits every other day and supplements weekly.
Any tips are appreciated!
Hi stinax182,
I'll link you to a post where I answered a similar question on sorting nymphs from frass (try a bucket with varying hole sizes drilled into the bottom):

The veggies and fruits are probably the most important food sources for the roaches. I usually use a combination of non-medicated chick feed, dog kibble, and baby cereals to mix things up every now and then. The gutload does not need to be high protein, but should be predominately grain-based and not animal-based.

Thank you very much! Very useful info!
Staple food for dubia should be a mix of high protein grains, oats, wheat or whole grain even some corn is ok. Chick feed is great and will raise the protein/nutrient content. Supplements if they are dry can be mixed into the dry food. Fresh veggies and fruits can be fed nearly everyday with good husbandry and making sure to remove uneaten produce before spoiling unless you have ample Cleaner Crews. I feed my colonies fresh organic produce daily, though I recognize some may not take so much care so for them I understand and say feed fresh produce 2-3x weekly making sure ventilation is good, uneaten remains are removed within 24-48 hours and frass does not become too wet and encourage mold. If you use Springtails or Isopods or other Roach Bin Cleaner Crews, they will be able to process additional produce remains and keep mold in check which will not only decimate a colony but causes many allergy problems that are reported with roach enclosures.
