I am interested in purchasing a pair of Pipa pipa. There is a reptile dealer about an hour drive away that has some for sale.
I searched the net and found very little info on their care, so any info is welcome.
Mainly, I want to know three things:
1. What temperature do they prefer?
2. How to tell male from female when not in breeding condition? I want a pair even if they never breed.
3. What to look for when choosing a Pipa?
I have experience breeding African Dwarf Frogs and African Clawed Frogs, and like most of the aquatic frogs I've seen.
I've seen these guys here and there but I've never owned one. The internet does not have a lot of information on them. I know the user Jaysommers on here breeds them, so I would shoot him a message and see what he has to say.
Anywho, on my limited knowledge of these frogs.. they are tropical and from the Amazon, so they need to be kept around 82F. The area of the world they live in would tell me they prefer softer water, but I am not 100% on that.. like most captive aquatic creatures, the best pH is a stable pH regardless. I have no idea what so ever how to breed them.. and as far as finding a healthy one? Hard to say, I usually say look for a frog that is gently plump, but these guys are oddballs and look like leaves.. No idea how to tell a sick one from a healthy one.
Seems like their diet can consist of nightcrawlers, which is a good all-rounder for most aquatic frogs (and terrestrials too).
Thanks for the input. I'll try asking Jaysommers.
