What type of creature is this? After I caught him by a lake in the grass I brought him back down to the lake and set him on a rock. Could the creature swim in the lake?
It is a toad. Probably a woodhouses toad. Newly morphed. They only are near big lakes during breeding season and when they turn into froglets. They are NOT good swimmers. Please do not release it directly into the water.
The Frog chooses its owner. Treat your life-long friend with respect and care and it will never disappoint!

Thank you so much for your reply Frogman. Well he had jumped out of my hand many times (did this hurt him) and I released him near the water but not in the water as I figured it was a Toad but was not sure. I hope he is okay. When I left he was on a rock. This area seems swarmed with Toads. Do you think there are any bullfrogs in my area, or is it just too hot and dry for them? Thanks..
Also about a month or two ago I was up in the Colorado Mountains where is freezes, and I did not see any frogs. I believe in that area the whole creek and lake would freeze over perhaps killing the frogs. Or would it?
