    Default More lighting questions...

I was wondering if this - http://smile.amazon.com/THG-6000-650...orn+light+6500 - would be something worth trying with my grey viv.

I have this - Amazon.com : Zoo Med Naturalistic Terrarium Hood, 18-Inch : Pet Habitat Lights : Pet Supplies - currently with a Zoo Med Reptisun 5.0 UVB Mini Compact Fluorescent (13 watt) and a 20 watt incandescent (that I used for heating on the cool days, not needed currently.) The tank seems dark and I've had no plant growth at all lately.

I did have Amazon.com: KLTECH NEW 48 LED White Blue Light 3 Mode Fish Tank Aquarium Clip Lamp: Computers & Accessories on it for a while along with an incandescent for heat, but that didn't seem very bright either, I'm using that on the Red-Eyed Leaf Frog viv right now in combination with with Zoo Med Reptisun 5.0 UVB Mini Compact Fluorescent (13 watt).

I would really prefer not to buy another light fixture right now...I've bought 3 in as many months trying to figure something out since my original one broke. Would that LED work to help with plant growth in combination with the reptisun in the same hood? Or is there a different CFL that would work better? Or should I just put a second reptisun in it, right now I'm only using half the hood because I do not need the incandescent.

It would work. I don't really like the bulbs with built in transformers like that. Don't like cfl's for that reason. That's why I went with an led fixture for my 18x18x24 and I love it. Can't beat the price either, $40 shipped. I will never have to buy another light.

$40 shipped is pretty sweet for a LED fixture, where and what did you buy, Bill?

Thanks for the link, Bill, I bookmarked it. I have vacation coming up, as well as county fair and then state fair, all during one pay period. After that is back to school shopping and school registration fees. So hopefully in a few months, I will be able to spare some $$ and get it.

Hi Bill! Does the linked fixture produces enough light for a 18x18x24 in. tall Exo Terra? Thank you !

Absolutely Carlos! It's my newest weapon of choice. The plants I keep under it grow awesome.

ONE MORE lighting question, I promise I will be done after this for now. My red eyes are a cross between regular and albino red eyes. They are not albino but, according to LLL, brighter colored than regular red eyes (I kind of agree, they are almost neon during the day compared to the red eyes I've seen in the store, but otherwise dark at night like normal.) Currently, on their future home, I have the reptisun UV lights. Will this adversely affect my tree frogs even though they're only "part" albino and not true albino?

Good freaking question! I really wish I had an answer to this one. I hope someone does because I would like to know the answer. Especially since I think red eyes are one of the few frogs that I would think could actually benefit from uv light. What with them being canopy dwellers and all.

I was thinking the same thing, Bill. I do not want to use the UV light if it could hurt them, but I also do not want to deny it if there is no issue.

Well, I know denying them uv is not detrimental whatsoever. Plenty of retf keepers do not use uv light and have no issues. Maybe this is a case of erring on the side of caution. Hopefully someone will chime in about it.

Yes, I'm more likely to err on the side of caution if no one really knows. I just feel stupid for not having thought of this before. Glad I didn't move them in there yet and end up having issues. I guess quarantine is also good for us to think of these types of things LOL

Amy - i wouldnt risk anything albino to put under uvb, there is no partial albino, it is either one or not.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!

Sooo...I hate the corn lights and the plants look unhappy enough that I'm going to spend $$ despite my vow not to. Another question...my tank is 24" long, will this light still work or should I go with a bigger one? Does it work on a timer switch? I see some of the lights say "timer ready" but not this one. One of my other LED's does not work with a timer so I want to make sure.

They may have a 24" version. Otherwise, it has legs that extend out. It does not have a timer built in. Not sure what "timer ready" means lol

Yeah, I just wanted to make sure I could plug it into my timer switch and have it turn on and off when it's supposed to lol. The legs extend up to 22"...but I should be able to just set it on the plexi right? It shouldn't get hot enough to hurt my frogs? They do have a 24" but the 18" is $10 cheaper.

If there's a 24" version, it's worth the $10. Sitting the legs on the plexi will eventually make the plexi warp in a bad way. Just a note: the plug will have a transformer on it, just like a printer, so make sure you have room for a 2"x3" box of a plug.

Thanks, Bill. I have plenty of space for the transformer so that shouldn't be a problem. I will get this - LED Aquarium Lighting Freshwater Bright - and hopefully not have to buy any other lighting for a long, long time.

Hmmmm. I think someone goofed on that posting. 10,000k and 460nm are great for saltwater, not freshwater. Although, I have seen people use that combo with mixed results.
