Default Pics of my Red-Eyed Leaf Frog's

I am so in love with these guys. I think I've picked names, though if the little one doesn't turn out to be a female like her hearty appetite suggests, I may have to change them. Big guy, who is officially male, is Tarrazu. The little one is Fortuna. If he/she turns out to be male, I will change the name in the future, Fortuna is not exactly masculine.

Fortuna - Getting plump in the two weeks since he/she came to me -

Tarrazu - He's much more shy than Fortuna, so it's hard to get good pictures. Is he too skinny? I have seen him eat, but Fortuna definitely dominates the food. I have started adding more crickets to the tank though. I bumped it from 6 to 10 to 12 tonight. First picture he's just waking up and transitioning colors, second picture he's in his hunting colors. For those that haven't read my other post, Tarrazu is calling, so definitely a male. He was 1 3/4 inches when I got him 2 weeks ago. I thought that was too small for calling to start, apparently not.

    So cute!

He's a little thin but he should put on some weight so long as he's eating well. You could try bowl feeding? Two bowls would be even better.

I have been bowl feeding but I will get a second bowl in there. That makes sense, Fortuna sits on the edge of it, so a second bowl will give him an opportunity to eat without the other one hovering. I have also been offering small dubias, but they prefer the crickets it seems. I did cover more of the tank too, it was after that he started calling, so I'm hoping it gave him more comfort.

Here's my setup for tonight. Fortuna, the little one, was already awake and eating by 730 pm, she is incredibly comfortable.

His belly has looked fuller, so he must have eaten. Last night 10 crickets and 1 dubia were gone. One bowl was completely empty except for one dubia, and that was the bowl Fortuna hangs out at. The other bowl, 4/6 crickets were gone, so hopefully that was Tarrazu. I put 12 crickets and 4 dubias in again tonight.

Tarrazu ate a cricket tonight as I dumped them into his bowl. Then he sat on the edge of it while Fortuna sat on the other. They have obviously each claimed a bowl. I may have to move stuff around in the future home, I didn't plan for two bowls. I was glad to see him enthusiastic about eating!

Today is 3 weeks since I got my babies! I thought I would share a few more pics. I snapped these after cleaning out the tank tonight. I think they may have been waiting for me to feed them. It wasn't even fully dark out (about 8 pm) and they were both awake just sitting. Quick changed out their paper towels, water, and snapped a couple of pictures. Dumped the crickets in the feeding bowl and let them go crazy. I was expecting them to be timid, shy eaters, but they have no problem stalking and snapping up those crickets as soon as I dumped them in.

Here is Fortuna, to show how the nose rub is doing. The healing process is much longer than I'd have expected, but at least it's healing without complications.

Tarrazu wasn't as easy to get a picture of, he hangs out in the leaves so it doesn't give me much opportunity to snap pics. Cannot see his nose rub here, but it is even smaller than Fortuna's. Still skinny but he is eating really, really well since adding a second bowl (thanks again, Heather!)

They look great . Healing nicely. I'm so glad to hear he's eating too.

They are one of my favorite species . Such precious little faces .

From my experience in healing adoptees I have found that most simple skin lesions (if healing) tend to take about 6 weeks to heal. I'm sure this can vary.

    Thanks everyone!

Heather, the place where I got them told me the nose rubs would be gone within a week, thank goodness for you guys telling me otherwise or I'd have been really worried by now.

Paddy will always be my favorite frog, being my first, but I have quickly fallen in love with the red eyes. I had no idea they had this much personality, as much as my greys! A few years ago, I never had any interest in red eyes at all because I thought they were fragile and boring. I got them for their beauty and have realized they are so much more.

I may have to move them to a different location in the house though. They are in my bedroom and Tarrazu woke me up several times last night with his chirps as he hunted. His chirps have also alerted my children that there are some new tree frogs in the house! As much as they want to spend the entire day staring at them, they've behaved and left them alone (I told them the tree frogs would die if they bothered them too much, not entirely true, but sometimes you need extremes to get kids to listen! LOL)

    Ha ha!

I have a ten gallon tetra tank in my room too so the sounds blend together nicely. Water, frogs singing, crickets chirping. I love it! I'm so used to it now I can't imagine it any other way .

Their personalities are so individual. I found that with all of my frogs. Shy to inquisitive, comical to mellow. Lucky is our entertaining. Callie is calm and sweet, Serena too. Hector is a bit more cautious. Queen Cassandra is just that, She's the prissy queen of the tank who will directly pee on you if she wants you to leave. However, Cassie loves my husband. Funny!

I'm betting you'll see some great personality come out as they mature .

    That's awesome, Heather.

I am going to be moving them out of quarantine and into their tank tonight, 3 days early, but I think we're good. The qt tank has needed to be misted 3x's a day to keep the humidity up. I will only have a pet sitter in once a day when I go on vacation, so I'd like to get them moved and observe them for a bit before we leave. The humidity is maintained much better in there than in the qt tank obviously, it only needs to be misted once a day. That should make it easy. I have to move a few things around to make a spot for the feeding bowl...I wasn't thinking about that when I planted the tank.

Any tips for making this transition the easiest?

wow has it already been nearly 30 days!!! crazy!

I always try to move the frogs early in the day so they are asleep when the move happens. If you are lucky they will be sleeping on pothos leaves and you can just cut the leaf and lay it in the enclosure. They are non the wiser until they wake up

If they are asleep on the side of the qt tank or somewhere else I just lightly nudge them on the but and they will open their eyes. They will typically walk onto my hand and I can transfer them into the new tank. I let them walk off my hand in the new tank so they don't freak out and jump all crazy.

Moving them in the morning gives them the whole day to relax and calm down before diner time hits. Don't be surprised if they don't eat the first couple nights after the move. That is how they protest and there isn't a thing we can do about it lol.

Okay, I will do it in the morning before work then. Tarrazu sleeps on a leaf that hangs from the screen top, so that will be easy to move. I hate that faux plant, but hopefully he'll find a place he enjoys sleeping more when he's moved. Fortuna sleeps on the wall, so I will have to wake that one up to move. Tomorrow is 4 weeks since I got them, in the middle of a flood, it went crazy fast. With the crazy heat/humidity fluctuations here, I think they're going to be happier in a more stable environment. An empty qt tank makes that a little more difficult to control.

Ahh the big move. I took the first three pics last night after feeding them.

Tarrazu has become quite the hunter. Still needs to put on some weight but he appears to be healthier and more active. He spends his night hunting and calling (keeping me awake!)

Fortuna is getting plump! (S)he has also grown a bit in the last month, more than I expected.

The new tank, all ready for them. This is with the new LED corn lights that I got. I do not really like them but I'm going to be using them until I have a little extra $$ to get the light Bill suggested. All the money I've wasted on hoods and bulbs the last few months, I could have easily bought one for each tank if I had listened in the first place.

Tarrazu after the move. He never even opened his eyes for the entire moving process (not that it was much for him!) He always sleeps on this stupid faux plant that I hate. I wasn't planning on moving it over, but hopefully he'll find a new spot to sleep. If not, the ugly plant may be in there a while.

Fortuna after the move. (S)he was on the glass so I had to nudge her and wake her up to move her. I don't think she was too stressed out by it, her eyes were open for a whole 30 seconds after she moved over.

And this picture made me decide that I'm going to be building a new tank, probably after Christmas (wonder if my fam will buy me giftcards to pet stores and plant stores?) It's just not as big as I want it to be. I thought they would be smaller because I was told they were about 2 months out of the water, and that would give me until next spring to get my next build going. Tarrazu is just under 2 inches and Fortuna is not far behind him. So it's going to need to happen sooner rather than later.
