Water plants! 😊

Hey guys!


I was wondering if anyone had some input on some kick *** water plants!


The froggy hosts enjoying the water will be FBT's. I've got most of my land plants, but haven't a clue on where to start with the water portion! So, throw some ideas at me, I'm open to anything! 😊


Also, does anyone have any experience with duckweed? I think it looks really awesome, although, I'm worried about it clogging the filter.


Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

Duckweed won't clog your filter , unless, it gets trapped in an area where water flows and pushes it underwater near your intake. And then it's just a matter of turning your filter off momentarily to free it. I will tell you this, duckweed is like herpes of the planted tank world, so be 100% sure you want it, because it's almost impossible to get rid of once you have it.

How deep is the water? What kind of look are you going for? Grassy? Stemmy plants growing out of the water? Floaters? Partially submerged? I can make tons of suggestions, it all depends in what you are going for.

To Bill's list of questions; you have to add expected light level. Some aquatic plants will do well in normal to low light; but some require bright conditions .

Oh goodness, it's so hard to narrow it down--all of those choices sound great! Haha okay, so now that I understand that duckweed is the glitter of the plants, then it's probably not the best idea �� As far as preference, grassy, and floaters sound pretty cool!


The water is 4.5 inches deep on one end, and there's a smaller portion (seperated by a dam to create an additional waterfall...or water trickle haha) and that portion is about 6 inches deep. Those measurements are without the inclusion of river rocks, though. Ultimately each end will be shallower I'm sure. I'm using a Reptisun 2.0 bulb, and a basking light (low heat). It seems pretty bright to me.

I have bulbs for Nymphaea lotus 'green', Crinum thaianum, and aponogeton ulvaceus. Do you guys think that these plants would flourish nicely in my viv?

DONT use duckweed it is a weed I got it in my freshwater aquarium and never got it out it doesn't stop growing and isn't to pretty either

Apongeton sp normally are taller plants that will spread leaves out across the water and you may get little flowers out of it, same with the crinium (onion plant). The lotus would work well. They can be kept short and manageable. Guessing you got yourself one of those seed packs from petsmart? not a lot of those bulbs end up being viable, but give them a shot

Your lighting would be considered "low light". Species that would be happy under that lighting would be: anubias, java ferns, bolbitis, cryptocoryne, swords (way too big), and a few others.

Oh wow, those are all beautiful. I especially love the java fern �� So, if one is planted under the basking light, where I'm sure it'll be much brighter, will the suggested plants still do well?


Also, the deeper side is under a waterfall, will it be too difficult to grow a plant beneath it?

Yup. Even your basking light is considered to be low light. You don't step into the realm of high light until you hit the t5ho or led lighting upgrades

As far as the waterfall, a lot will depend on the turbulence from the waterfall, if there is any.

Wow, and it seemed so bright to me! I have much to learn!


The waterfall doesn't seem to have too much of a heavy flow, but I could be wrong.


Would I plant these plants into a substrate, or would river rocks suffice?

Depends on the plant. The java fern will be happy just tied to a rock and placed in the water somewhere. Same for anubias and bolbitis. Crypts would need a substrate. Or at the very least, a monthly dose of root tab fertilizers. They are heavy root feeders. The bulbs would also need substrate.

If you go with java fern, I would recommend 'windelov' or 'trident'. It has a fancy 3 pronged leaf tip that looks nice. If you want some standard stuff, give me a couple weeks and I can send you some. I think the java I have growing in my planted grow tank needs to be trimmed.
