Hi! I would like to know how heating should be maintained for a pacman enclousure. I would be happy to hear what you guys use and I also have a few questions.
Would a ceramic bulb work for a normal or albino and what wattage is acceptable? Also would a heating mado have work? Here in PA we get some pretty cold winters and I dont want the frog to get burned on the glass so tips on where to place the mat would be helpful. I have also heard of automatic foggers/temp controllers and was wondering if any lf you use/recommend them. I dont want to spend too much money but if I have to then I will. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
You can use Ceramic Heat Emitters for them, but you will not want to go over 60 watts. You'll also want to use a lamp with a Ceramic socket and a dimmer switch. Heat pads or UTHs can be used in tandem with CHEs, but must be placed on the side of the tank not the bottom. Covering 3/4 of the screen lid with Saran Wrap(plastic wrap), aluminum foil, or plexiglass will help hold in heat and humidity.
Fogger units combined with environmental control units(ECUs) can drastically assist you in maintaining your frog's environmental parameters. Zoo Med Hygrotherm units will control a heating device and a humidifying device. The Zoo Med Reptifogger works well combined with the Hygrotherm, but some people prefer to buy cheaper humidifiers and convert them into units to be used for terraria with success.
Since you mention not wanting to spend too much money; mist the enclosure manually for the time being. The wattage required to heat enclosure will be directly proportional to the room temperature and the enclosure size. If room is not too cold; you might be able to get away with only a ceramic heat emitter.
My recommendation is to get a dome fixture with a built in dimmer (Fluker's or similar) and get a 60 watt emitter, like Colleen/Jerrod stated. Then cover your whole screen top with aluminum foil securing it to top with electrical tape or similar. Place your fixture on top and using a marker, draw a line around it's perimeter on foil. A scissor will work well to cut the marked out hole; just make it larger by around an inch. Once connected you can use the built in dimmer to adjust the heat output.
Once adjusted; the above idea will work fine as long as the room temp is stable. If not; then you will need to invest more money for a thermostat type automatic controller (i.e. Hygrotherm). If you can dial in 82-84F daytime with a few degree drop at night that will be fine, good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
