    Default My First Vivarium!! :)

Hi guys! I'm Madison, but I usually go by delfiend (it's my YouTube username and long-time nickname).

I love animals and have had tons of pets, ranging from my first ever pet, an African Dwarf Frog named Active, to my almost-one-year-old bearded dragon Freddy. I've owned hamsters, a guinea pig, praying mantises, all sorts of fish, hermit crabs, a few reptiles, and of course my dog. There's nothing I enjoy more than reading and learning about fascinating creatures, besides actually being able to interact and care for said creatures!

I spend most of my time participating on several forums regarding different animals I've kept/keep, admining for a few different animal-related groups, and of course making YouTube videos about my pets and helping to educate others about them.

I just recently was able to acquire an Exo Terra 18"x18"x24" terrarium that I've just today planted and made a vivarium! It's my first ever, and I'm super pumped to have it all set up! Here's some pictures!

Here's a list of all the plants in the viv, and then where they're located. My bromeliads are currently "planted" in the soil (more like loosely packed in place using sphagnum moss), and if they work out like that, great! If not, I am planning on getting more logs anyway.

    • Calathea 'Velvet Touch'
    • Pilea involucrata "Moon Valley"
    • Philodendron 'Wend-imbe'
    • Philodendron 'Moonlight'
    • Polystichum tsus-simense 'Korean Rock Fern'
    • Anthurium 'Secret'
    • Neoregelia 'Blueberry Muffin'
    • Neoregelia 'Cheers'
    • Neoregelia liliputiana hybrid (Donna Strand)

I know it's not the fanciest of vivariums, but I'm VERY VERY proud of it!! I think it looks spectacular and I can't wait to get a dart frog in there to live it up!

Let me know what you think!!

Looks great for a first tank! Nice job. A few suggestions, if I may: the tank has a lot of wasted space up high which is easily remedied by adding a few branches that extend higher. The neos are true epiphytes and will quickly rot out planted into the substrate like that, and finally, the anthurium on either side are going to grow huge and block the view from the front. I would move those back to mid ground or rear. Otherwise, it looks very good! You should be proud of it

    UPDATE
I was really liking how the viv looked, where I placed the neos and all, so I went to my local beach (Lake Eerie) which is like 5 minutes from my house, scrounged around for some small, thick pieces of driftwood, brought them home, cooked them for 3 hours at 215 F, and them drilled holes in them for each neo. I packed them in place with moss to encourage rooting and then managed to place them back in the vivarium in pretty much the same spots as before. Now everything's perfect!

I also picked up a few bigger pieces of driftwood I might add.

@bill, thanks for the advice on the anthurium! The store I bought from had them listed as for the front 1/3 of the vivarium. Do you know if you can trim them or anything?

An anthurium in the front 1/3? Wow. What's the name of this joint so I don't shop there lol. Anthuriums just grow too large for most vivs. That will grow about 24", with a few added inches for the spathes. You can trim them, but that will just help with it's bushiness . The problem there is if you take too much foliage away, it may not throw any spathes for you, and that where most people see the beauty in anthuriums.
