The vitamin D production and calcium absorption applies to reptiles, not amphibians. They do not NEED UV, after noticing such a huge change in my frogs though, I will not go back to non-UV bulbs. The hood on my tree frog tank broke about a month ago and I've been using an LED light since then, they are nice because they don't put out any excess heat. I just ordered another hood and new UV bulbs though because I do like them better. As for flickering, I've never had one get to the point of flickering. I replace them every 6 months.
