    Default Going, Going, Gone

I will be leaving for camp soon, a camp the lasts from monday-saturday. I cannot afford a babysitter. Will my three (fat, healthy) american toads be able to survive for almost a week without food? They are fat and they move around a lot so they are extremely healthy. Also, I am allowed to keep my toads inside the house now for those who were wondering.

Feed them just a tad bit more until you leave. Make sure to give them clean water too. They should be fine.

Is there a Nature or science center close by that would care for them? Or maybe a reptile/amphibian place. No other friends or family that would help out?

Nope. I believe that they will do fine, we are feeding them a tad bit more than usual right now to get them fat enough, but not to much so their eating habits become disrupted.

My concern wouldn't be so much about the food, but the water. If they dirty up the water w/urine and poop that's a long time having to use only "toilet" water for soaking. Unless you're going to rig up a shallow water tub with a filter.

Without food, yes ; but like Gail mentioned, the clean water issue is a concern .

We have had toads before that survived a long time in a window well even through huge storms. THIS WAS BEFORE I ACTUALLY RESEARCHED HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THEM!!!!! Do you think I should just leave them in the terranium, or in a window well? In the terranium they will have only 1 water bowl, but outside maybe 2 or 3. However, my window wells do not get very wet when it rains. My biggest concern is predetors. Any dangers? I am sure there is, but nothing has happened before.

Your best bet is to leave them in the terrarium the entire time. I don't feel comfortable saying but.....they'll be fine for six days.

I to would be mostly concerned about predators. Is there going to be rain and storms the week that you are going to be gone? I think you could possibly do this though I don't reccomend it. I think you should just keep them in there cage with plently of accessible water. I hope this helps!

I will! Also, could a rabbit pose a threat to toads? We have a pet rabbit (as of today) and I am wondering if my toads will sense the scent of the rabbit and become scared of me.

All you have to do is wash your hands well and rinse very well between animal care .

With a pet bunny (do you keep it inside?) I would recommend learning how to trim their nails. I was about your age when I learned how to trim my cats', dog's, and bunny's nails. Maybe your parents can help you out with that. It is worth it! Before you try it yourself though, I would recommend having a vet show you or having your parents help you look at videos online to learn how to do it properly. You don't want to clip too far or it will bleed and it will hurt them. I always keep quickstop (a powder to stop the bleeding if you cut too far) on hand but have never had to use it on a cat or bunny, just our old dog a couple of times.
