Hey everyone! i guess the fish in my lake really like frogs because
this is the second time i have caught a fish with a frog down his throat.
anyway, i have decided to keep him, and have named him Helios. He is a Fowler's toad
and is adorable. The fish left him unscathed but he is still shaken up. I have him in a little critter
keeper until i can bring my empty ten gallon up to speed. He is about 1 and 3/4 of an inch long.
he has already eaten today though, at least four crickets.

Thanks everyone! This is the first time I've seem a toad near the lake. I don't think its a froglet though. I have a substrate question. I keep my whites coco fiber moist, but how wet or dry should Helios's soil be? I hear they like to burrow.

I have 4 toads set up in a 40 gallon breeder tank with up to 4 inch of substrate in some areas because yes, toads love to burrow. So don't bother trying to plant a tank and making it all pretty because it won't stay that way, that's just the way of the toad. Toads prefer drier and cooler viv's than WTF (I have them also) so just slightly damp on one side is good and let it be drier on the other side. Always have a water soaking dish available. My male Southern will sometimes hang out for 1.5 days in the water dish, maybe he's just waiting for one the girls to show up, I dunno. They also like their temps 68 to 75 so no heat source is needed for him. I would love to see some photos of the back of the toad, which also helps for identification.

I really can't see up close, but if he has a large cranial crest and does NOT touch the gland parotoid glands most likely American Toad. If it has a small low crest along with 3 or more warts in black spots then Fowlers. Also these two toads do cross breed.
