Default Fire Belly Toad Died, But How?

You should NEVER introduce a frog directly into your tank. You should always quarantine first. Always choose a toad that is alert and active and with FBTs, green. (And not skinny) he was likely very sick. No wonder Bogart bullied him, he was threatened. Sounds like either bloat or impaction. Definitely change the substrates. I recommend either coco fiber or large stones.

Thank you for that advice, I am a new to fire belly toads, so I was not too aware about how to introduce the frogs to one another, at the pet store they are all together in the same tank, and maybe I figured they would be used to each other from having been around other frogs previously.
I suppose picking out Hercules out of the two other healthier frogs that were there was where my weakness came in, I have always had a heart for taking in animals that are unwell and trying to help them, usually I am fairly successful. Unfortunately I wish I could have sensed better what was wrong with him and been more educated in helping him
If you don't mind me asking, what would the bloat be attributed to? And I assume that impaction would be from possibly having swallowed one of the gravel stones?
I will change the gravel out first thing tomorrow when I can get to a pet store.
Oddly enough, Bogart is more brown in color, he was this way when I bought him, but he has been very healthy and very active all along. Will he turn green at some point?
Thanks again for your reply, I really appreciate it

I am sorry for your loss.
The gravel should not be a risk for impaction if it is only on the water side. As long as the frogs have no opportunities to pick up any pieces of gravel they can't pass on the land side, you are fine. Sound like your frog may have had a pre-exisisting condition.

Hi there, thank you, I appreciate that
Unfortunately I think the gravel may have been an issue, it was in fact on both the dry and wet sides of the tank, situated at a sloped angle. I went to the pet store yesterday and bought some cypress mulch bedding and a wet dish instead of the setup I currently have, and I fed Bogart in a separate feeding tank today to make sure he would't ingest any gravel accidentally. I do think that may also be true about Hercules though, he did not seem the liveliest when I got him, but I wanted to help.
    Thanks for your reply LordofStuff12
