My cats learn the hard way. As kittens, they were already bit my snakes (non-venomous ones of course), pinched by my hermit crabs, almost drowned in my fish tank, got spiked by my hedgies and got snapped on by mr.dumplings (my late chinese softshelled turtle). From then on, they know that anything that doesn't look like a cat or a dog is potentially harmful. They usually just watch from afar, from a safe height or pretend they're asleep haha
