I recently purchased a 55 gallon aquarium off of craigslist. I'm in the process of cleaning it up and making it safe for anything I decide to put in it. Any ideas as to how to get off the mineral build up that's on the glass from the previous owner?
Chris
Ive heard that using a little bit of vinegar and some elbow grease works wonders. Btw, how much was the tank?

When I got my hex tank it had a lot of mineral deposit and I used vinegar. Then rinse the hell out of it. There shouldn't be any lingering odor or it isn't rinsed well enough.

This is going to freak most people out, but I use CLR. Followed by vinegar or lemon juice then rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse. I used to accumulate 'retired' reef tanks and it works like a charm.

I use a 50/50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water, it doesn't stink as much as most other options and it evaporates very cleanly.
A scraper/razor like the kind found in the paint section of hardware stores (STANLEY | Single Edge Razor Blades - 10 pack | Home Depot Canada) is also a great glass cleaning aid. Just be sure to keep it away from the silicone.
My tanks are built out of old glass windows that were stored in a barn. The above cleaning materials will also work on barn cat urine.
