It's been quite a while since I've raised a frog from a tadpole. I'm happy to be doing this again. I'll be waiting till it morphs and I can determine it's gender before I name it. Am I correct in thinking I will be able to determine it's gender based on the size of the tympanum as soon as it finishes morphing into a frog?

I also wanted to get a second opinion on that little bump he's got. Is that the start of the arm, or something else? I don't remember seeing that in the last few Bullfrogs I raised.

And by the way, I'm Randy. Nice to meet you all.

Randy,,not sure about the bump..yeah a tympanum larger than the eye means a male frog..the same size as eye a female...

Can you use the same method to determine the sex of a Leopard Frog, too, or is it different for those guys? I really want to know what me Leopard Frog Tadpoles are, my larger one is starting to form the tympanum already. I call that one a girl, just because she is larger, but I really have no idea what they are. If I can use this method to sex them, I would be thrilled! Oh and about the "bump" on the bullfrog tadpole, it may be the sprical (or gill vent). Which I just learned about a few weeks ago as well. I thought my babies had a parasite that was boring into their side, lol. I felt really silly when I found out it is a natural part of the anatomy of a tadpole. Good luck with your baby! He is cute!

His arm eventually came out of that spot, it just seemed odd there was only one. I had the same fears.

I do think it is the same for leopard frogs.

"How can one tell the males from the females?
The easiest way to sex leopard frogs is by looking at the ears; males have ears larger than their eyes, whereas females have ears the same size as their eyes. Also, males are smaller, have vocal sacs that swell out of their armpits when they call, and their thumbs swell during the breeding season to help them hold on to a female during copulation."

Thank you so much for the link. I am glad to hear that I will be able to tell the frogs sex once they have grown! I am so excited, now I know I will be able to name them properly. Also, I am not surprised that the arms grew from the same spot. It does look like that is where they should be placed on an adult frog, lol. I have posted new pics of my babies if you want to see them. There is a link to my album under the post here. If you get new pics of your little ones, I would love to see them! Thanks again for the link and the advice!
