Hi everyone, I have just adopted two Indonesian Toads and would like to know more about them. The best terrarium setup, vitamins, food, temperature, breeding etc... I don't want to breed them, but did adopt a female and a male. I did talk to the owner of the pet store where I got them, but want to know as much as I can to give them a healthy and happy life.
Thanks!
Cheryl
The best way to take care of them is reading about their natural habitat. Where do they live, what can you find out about the temperature, moist and the surface they live on.
Most toads like loose ground so they can dig a bit, enough hiding spaces (they are a bit shy) like rocks and plants and a water bowl. Make sure the water bowl is shallow enough. If it's too deep they will drown.
Some pictures to get an idea for the setup.
Toads will eat almost anything that moves in front of their head. Crickets, ants, earthworms, isopods etc. Remove the "food" at night to prevent wounds on your toads. Crickets for example will try to bite your toads and injure them that way.
Make sure the terrarium has the right temperature, and the temperature can drop a bit at night but not that much. Like 28 degrees Celsius (82 fahrenheit) day temperature, and 23 degrees Celsius (73 fahrenheit) at night. Make sure you don't place the heat source under your terrarium. Toads like to dig and they can become too hot this way. Indonesia is also known for it's high humidity, so make sure you have some source of humidity. You can spray the terrarium every day or you could buy a rainforrest kit (don't know the real name). Put this kit on a time clock and every day there will be a small rain shower. Vitamines can be added to the crickets. You can find more on vitamines on this forum.
Are you referring to Duttaphrynus melanostictus? If so; here is some info on them and their habitat: AmphibiaWeb - Duttaphrynus melanostictus. Also, a care sheet: Black-Spined Toad Care Sheet - Bufo melanostictus/Duttaphrynus melanostictus - Common Indian Toad, Common Asian Toad - Captive Care, Habitat, Origin, Breeding and more... THEAMPHIBIAN.co.uk. Info on food supplements: http://www.frogforum.net/food-feeder...schedules.html. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
