Gnat problem... Please help.

Hello not sure if this is the correct place to post this. If you live in NC; especially close to the coast then you probably know that we have alot of gnats out here. My question is how did yall get rid of them and keep them out of the enclosures? I am about to clean out the aquarium again and replace the substrate when I clean out a 20 gal high that I have sitting downstairs so hopefully the gnats wont come back. However I have done that in the past and they keep coming back. Now however they just seem interested in the toad enclosure that I have since it has more substrate in it than my tree frog enclosure. I also keep the windows shut at all time in the room that I have both enclosures in since the temp in that room doesn't change much and usually stays at room temp or gets close to 80 degrees. Any ideas?

Depending on the type of fly, you may be able to trap them with a funnel trap.

I've used a simplified version of this for fruit flies where I only made a funnel that led into a jar with bait in the bottom, such as old fruit. You don't actually need a killing solution in the bottom, because the insects will easily fly into the funnel and then get themselves trapped between the funnel edge and the jar... they rarely escape back out of the tiny hole at the base of the funnel. You can then either release them outside or kill them. These can be made quickly and inexpensively, and you can place a couple around your enclosures with different baits to capture adults. It might not completely fix the problem, but it can reduce the number of adult flies in and around your enclosures and home.

I will have to try that. I cleaned out my old 20 gal and put my toads in it, but I forgot to get a lid for it.... Good thing they are toads and not tree frogs. :P But so far I haven't seen many gnats since i cleaned it out.
