Help needed iding my sons frog

I was told when he got it as a tab pole that it was a leopard frog, but I am not so sure now because he found another one that matches the photo of a northern leopard perfectly. The older frog we have had around shows no resemblance so I'm trying to get it figured out.

He's cute. He looks like he needs a small pond to swim in though along with the land.

His swimming areas on the other side the design of a 6 yr old boy must be followed.

Lol, so true! My six year old daughter is very particular about what we do for the pets, too. She is helping me set up our 55 gal long aquarium for our Leopard Frog Tadpoles. She had to have the exact plants she picked out for our land side of their tank, lol. Isn't amazing how intuitive they can be about their pets though. Even for children so young they still realize that their frogs need to swim and make sure mom and dad meet the froggy's needs! I am guessing your sons frog is wild caught, have you looked up the local frogs in you area. That's always a good place to start when trying to ID any locally found frogs. I will look them up too and see if I can take a guess at him. But you know your frog better than I so you will have the best luck figuring him out. Good luck with him. Frogs are fun pets! we will have 5 when my tads arrive in the next few days.

I did a little bit of research on your sons froggy. There are not too many species in Minnesota so it was not too difficult. I only found two that could be what you have and when I opened the second I knew he was not him. The face is too different. So that only leaves one in my opinion. Which is the Mink Frog. In case you wanted to know my second guess, it was the Canadian Toad. But I found a lot of pics of the mink frog and I found a few that look very close to yours. Good luck on your hunt. After reading your last PM I realized that native frogs may not be the place to look for this guy...? You said you got him from an internet site - or rather grandma did - right? Do you know the name of the site she ordered the tadpole from, dear? I would start there to see if they even know the species of frogs they are selling, lol. My tads are mail-order too, but I am about 90% sure they are Leopard Frogs. I wish I could see his face more clearly, could you possibly get a good side view of him sitting on the table or something? It would be very helpful in helping me ID him for you. And about the first pic, are his sides whitish like that or was it just the camera flash reflecting off his wet skin? Every detail is important when looking for a species ID, especially since I can not get my hands on him to see him for myself, lol. Oh and one more thing, how long did it take for him to morph from a tadpole to a froglet? Thanks Lyndsay, hope we can figure him out for you.

He was a tadpole for almost year or so and started to get legs and had hind legs for 3 months and then the front came slowly after that time.. so it was close to 18 months or more of watch this guy grow. He came from naturegifts.com also. i will be calling them to see what i can find out

Wow, 18 months as a tadpole! I heard that the American Bullfrog can take up to 2 years to morph, lol. I am glad my leopard frogs grow faster than that, . I would not want to wait that long to see my froggys change, lol.
