We just got 2 of these frogs.I was told that I have a male & a female. We decided to name them Bonnie & Clyde.(Hoping Bonnie is a Bonnie of course)I've been googling info on this breed & from the pages that I found I'm sure that we have a male.(has the dark patches on the underside of hands & forearms) -just not positive on the if the other is a female. This is the site that I found my info on gender African Clawed Frog . I do know that I can't use chlorinated water & they prefer the longer tanks over the taller.(We just got them a 20 gallon long as the tank we got with them was a 20 gallon tall.I was told to feed them every 2-3 days & that these guys like live night crawlers. I was curious how much is best & what is good to offer so they get a food variety. These 2 seem to love to do a cute free float(my nickname) & hover mid water. So far their tank doesn't have much in it (I want to fix it up correctly & give them places they can play & hide)I welcome any & all suggestions on our new buddies.I felt bad for them as when we first got em their tank was filthy & had algae & hard water buildup on it.I have a Fluval U2 submersible filter for cleaning the waste & API stress Coat+ for removing chlorine from water & for protecting the frogs from stress as I have to completely change their tank-as you can see from my pic -their tank was pretty icky.(part of the reason for the new tank redo)I've got a tank vacuum for helping clean it as well.
Here is a pic of them from when we first got them.I'm going to start working on the new 20 gallon long tank tonight & hoping for advice on what all would be good to get for them for hides & such to keep them happy & healthy(Sorry this pic is blurry- I'm learning how to use a new camera & the tank water in that tank was really icky.)

I am fairly new to this, but I have seen some set ups with flat sided pottery laying on the bottom to hide in, like a terra cotta pot. Are you growing plants in there? I have also seen a tube cut lengthwise to make a cave with cocoanut hair and aquatic plants tied to it with thread until it all roots together. I thought that was neat looking. I have a moss ball in my tank and Michigan kicks it around. I am not sure if he is playing with it or not when he does that. I think giving them some sand to dig in will be good as well. My little buddy was trying to dig and burrow into rocks before I realized the sand would be better. I wouldn't do the rocks at all. They sometimes swallow the small ones, and the big ones let too much stuff fall though to the bottom and that turns into a nasty mess. I also have an old, but safe, mug nestled in my tank that he swims into sometimes. I try to keep soft edges to avoid damage to his feet.
I hope something in here is helpful!
Thanks for the tips. Actually at moment they don't have any hides or such-that's why I was asking for suggestions.I'm thinking the previous owners didn't research this breed.I'm working on fixing them up a proper frog home that they'll enjoy though. I was thinking maybe the sand also but wasn't sure which to get.
I have their 20 gallon long tank started.I couldn't decide on what type of sand to use so at moment the tank has a substrate called Fluorite for the plants I'm going to be putting in there.I havea piece of driftwood that I'm hoping will soak up water & sink pretty soon in the tank-I've read that I may have to tie something heavy to it & sink it also.I added a terra cotta pot on it's side & their plastic plant they're used to as well. I need to get their lights & start getting plants.I'm using a Fluval 2 filter to help clean the water & removed clorine & added stress coat with Stress Coat.So far they look to be more active in the new tank & I think I heard the male (Clyde) sing today for first time sine we got himIt wasn't very loud or for very long but he did it twice.I'm not sure if the other frog (Bonnie) answered.-I'm hoping we weren't told wrong about having a male & female as both frogs show that dark arms.Though 1 is def bigger than the other & today it did look like 1 was grabbing the other around the waist but kept loosing hold. Here is more current pics of them in a clean tank lol.
