I didn't realize pacs change colors...
If I keep my Fantasy on paper towel, he turns a light pink/peach color. If he is allowed to burrow in EcoEarth, he turns chocolatey or orange. They are not instantaneous changes, but I was trying out different bedding and noticed he adjusts himself to his surroundings.
What other Ceratophrys species do this?
All Pacmans appear to have capability to adjust their color according to their environment .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !
Sweet! I like them even more now. Do African bullfrogs / pixies do this? My friend has one and I am constantly telling him how much better my frogs are than his.
All the different Ceratophrys species have chromataphores which are used to adjust their colors. Cuttlefish have one of the most phenominal ability to use their chromataphores to blend seamlessly with their environment. Pacman frogs can only slightly adjust theirs and is usually only to darken or lighten to blend with the soil they burrow into. Pyxies can lighten and darken. Some will reveal a pattern that is blended with their drab green and browns.
I believe most if not all frogs can change color to a different degree as a way to camouflage themselves. Something I wish I could do!
