    Default The Zoomed Bug Napper

Everyone in this hobby knows feeding a GABF can be expensive. I have three and I frequently visit my local pet store I have spent about $30.00 this month alone in feeders. I was wondering has anyone tryed using the Zoomed Bug Napper. Would wild caught insects be safe. It certainly would save time and money

I'd be worried if wild insects have transmittable parasites and/or have been exposed to pesticides from someone else's yard, especially if you live in a neighborhood. Never used that though, I always feed store-bought/self-cultured insects (dubias).

The Bug Napper is a discontinued product. Main consideration when collecting bugs, regards of method used, is that they do not contain pesticides, etc. For those living in the country that might be a possibility. However if you live in a city, even if you do not use them, there is a high chance your close neighbors do. In Virginia Beach where I'm located, even the city drives trucks around neighborhoods with huge pesticide smog machines during mosquito season .

Have you ever consider starting a Dubia colony? You could easily cut your expenses way down once it starts producing .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

I would start a dubio colony but I live in florida. State law dont let online retailers ship roaches to florida. None of my local pet stores carry roaches

I'm pretty sure the only roaches legal in fl are discoids, and I believe I read somewhere that male hissers are okay as well but don't quote me on that one

I wouldn't feed wild caught insects, pesticides are undetectable and kill quickly, as can any parasites the bugs may be carrying. That sucks that Florida outlawed dubias! They are THE best feeding insect! Now that I have dubias I no longer feed those smelly, loud, nasty crickets. Can you tell I hate crickets LOL!
You could try setting up your own feeder colonies, like colonies of mealworms, waxworms, whatever you feed. It's not as difficult as you may be thinking for the meal and waxworms. Just provide food, bedding, a heat pad and egg crates for them to climb in to metamorphose and that's pretty much it!

I adore mine! Last year I got 99-100% of my mantid's food with it.This year I will use it to feed my new pets, Freddy the Whites tree frog and 2 leopard geckos. And of course my mantids too! It is well worth the money.
I will suppliment the bugs on the trap with moths I catch at favorite lights around town. Few people spray around here and there is so much woodland and fields that are wild so I dont worry much about sprays. I stay away from blueberry fields.

Another thing that's fun about it is the enjoyment of seeing all the different moths that come to it. I dont use the trap part at the bottom, I hang it up and put a small net cage up under it and leave the zipper door open so most of the bugs go in it. I use a clothes line clip to hold one part closed around the top of the light so the cage does not fall. The whole thing glows so more bugs can see it. It looks cool, glowing kind of purple in the dark!
