Hi and looking for some info

Hi I joined this forum to get some more information on keeping of frogs.

I am going to be setting up a Red Eyed Tree frog tank this weekend very excited!

ive read a lot of info on this forum

I'm getting last few bits together including the gravel but don't know the depth I'll need.

And for the coco layer. What depth do I require.

im going to try a planted tank my first time must prepare the plants I've read they can have pesticides etc so need to be washed and re-potted in amphibian safe soil.

I'll be getting a 45x45x45 exo terra tank and the canopy for this no idea the bulb though even looking on the Exo terra site just confused me more

anyway I keep reptiles (3 garter snakes , 1 corn snake, 1 ribbon snake) and 1 Tremper blizzard leopard gecko
6 giant African snails
6 tarantulas only 2 are adults others are juveniles.
1 giant train millepede
2 land hermit crabs
stick insects
two fish tanks
2 fire bellied toads.


previously and hoping to again I had green and brown anoles, a boa, cockroaches , fire Salamander, fire bellied newts and axolotli.

First congrats on your first Red Eye tree frog . I have 5 of them and absolutely love them!

False bottom layer - If it is Leca or Rock should be 1.5 Inches in depth (3.81cm) to 2 Inches (5.08cm)

Coco layer - If you are using Live plants you will need something other than Coco (it has no nutritional properties) I would recommend using ABG Mix or something similar for your soil layer, you will want 3in (7.62cm) of the soil. For whatever soil layer you use you will want to cover it with a .5inch (1.27cm) of leaf liter. This will help keep your frogs clean and will help lock moisture into the soil. I also recommend seeding the soil with some Springtails and optional isopods. They will help keep the soil clean and will also consume the frog waste and decaying leaves. This will help keep the tank clean and the soil healthy for your plants. Doing it this way will also allow you to go much longer between soil changes in the tank.

For lights I would recommend either a florescent tube or LED lights. Either one of those can provide the Full spectrum lighting your plant will need to thrive. They will also not dry the air out and will allow you to maintain the required humidity without having to mist the enclosure every hour to keep it up. The frogs do not require any special lighting to be healthy.

The size of tank you are getting is not the ideal size. It is preferred to use a tank that is a minimum of 60.96cm tall. The reason for this is because you will lose 15.62cm to the substrate which will leave 45cm of height left for your frog to use. Red eye frogs are arboreal and will not be happy if they do not have sufficient climbing space.
