I put their bowl of crickets in around dusk. If I have to turn on the light in their room I throw a towel over their tank until I shut the light off.
But I'v only had them for a month.... So someone else with more experience will likely pop in too.

I have 5 Red Eye Tree Frogs. We put the bowls of crickets into the tank at night right before we turn the lights out and let them wake up and eat when they are ready. Waking your frog up to eat will only stress them out and can lead to opportunistic parasites to set in and cause you all sorts of grief. Best to let them eat when they are ready. If you aren't bowl feeding your frog/s you should give it a try for a few days. It is simple and you can tell how well your frog is eating and your crickets will last longer because any uneaten ones by morning can be added back the cricket container so eat, drink, and get ready to maybe be diner the following night

    Bowl Feeding

Use a Pyrex glass bowl with at least 2" high sides.
    Add Crickets to bowl
    Add supplements to crickets (dusting)
    Place bowl in tank

Your frogs will take a bit to adjust to it. You may see them trying to get the crickets through the glass, but don't worry they will eventually figure it out and take to it. Usually within a night or 2.

You should also be dusting the crickets prior to feeding them to your frogs. Gut loading the crickets is not enough. Here is a link to a sticky with some guidelines for a dusting schedule.
