    Default Empty large exo terra...

Hello everyone i have an exo terra 24x18x24 and cant decide what to put in it. I was debating between convict tree frogs, tiger legged tree frogs, red eyed , or whites. I really like the convicts and tiger legs but do they get as big as the red eyes?im looking for a decent sized frog that will feed for me and be very active and cool to look at.But one of my concerns was that the whites will be too messy, is this true?thanks i would lover to hear lots of different feedback

    Hi Andrew

Do you have your mind set on a tree frog species?

How about P terribilis ? They are very easy to care for.
IMO- easier than red eyes or tiger legs
They are always out and very entertaining
They will do well ( in a trio ) in that size tank.
( you would have to convert the top of the tank to glass - though- it's not difficult)

Pictured here ( on LLLReptile 's site ) - juvenile- Phyllobates terribilis ( 'Mint')

as they mature the look like this - this pair (?) is about 14 months old

whites do get messy thats why I keep mine on a reptile carpet and only use fake plants for them real plants will just get crushed lol
if you want to do a real planted set up then go with red eyes they are light weight and move around delicately. Tiger legs are smaller than red eyes by half an inch or more, convicts i'm not sure like I said on insta but looking at pics they are probably smaller too.

    Hello,

Convicts are great but not very active. Like Agalychnis, they won't move at all as long as there is light... but they are not heavy, slightly smaller than red eyes and should do well with plants.

For Whites I would suggest a somewhat larger terrarium.

Are red eyes active at all during the day?i mainly want my frogs so at nighttime i can look into their cage and see all the activity.I really like the way the convicts look over red eyes, and i wanted to possibly convicts since all of them are wild caught.Does anyone know anything about the convict tree frog species?

Reds are not active at all during the day. They hunker down as soon as the lights come on and change color to a lighter green to blend in with the plant life and hide.

I have a convict tree frog since almost two months. He sleeps at day, as already mentioned. At night he gets active, which means he is still not moving much, rather sitting somewhere and observing his environment. I can look at him with a torch for some seconds, when light is on too long he will go back in sleeping posture. Its a very calm frog and an enthusiastic eater, eats crickets, woodlice and small roaches. Acclimatization to captive condition was (in my case) without problems, but its always a risk with WC.

Basic care is similar to Red eyed tree frogs.

At the moment hes still in Quarantine, the behaviour might change when he comes into his final enclosure. It will also be a 60*40*60 cm ExoTerra.

Females might be hard to get, I'm hoping to get one some day... Localities should better not be mixed for breeding attempts, since H. calcaratus is member of a cryptic species complex.

I just received an Exo-Terra 24x18x24 - It's PERFECT size for two adult Whites in my opinion. I'll try to attack some images of my setup that I'm still working on.

If you want a really active gruip of frog, I would get Whites Tree Frogs, or Squirrel Tree Frogs, I've had two Red-Eyes and they don't ever come out when the lights are on, mine didn't anyways. My whites don't mind at all, they don't mind to be looked at, they hardly mind when I move stuff around. The Squirrel Tree Frogs are just crazy, I don't think I've ever seen a species that is as active as they are.

I had my 3 white's in a tank that size for a while. After trying many different configurations with decor, live/fake plants dirt/water base, it was a disaster to maintain. I love my white's but they are so destructive and messy! They now live in a smaller size with a fantastic assortment of large leaf fake plants from the dollar store and water in the bottom.
