Good morning all,
Just a quick question for you, my Exo-Terra tank is 2 weeks old. It's all planted out and the plants are doing VERY well indeed. Small problem - On my piece of wood in the middle, white and green mould has started to develop. I read somewhere this is perfectly normal, and it will eventually die. How true is this?
Is it a good idea to take the wood out, clean it, and then soak it in water for 24 hours to make sure it stays moist? (I imagine the mould problem is where the woods is wet and then dries out?)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm itching to get my tank ready for frogs!!
Thanks in advance =]
Mold is normal in a freshly set up vivarium. Isopods normally munch on it. But if you don't have them in there, it will go away on it's own in a few weeks. It may get worse before it gets better. But it should go away on it's own.

Thank you Chipmunk, i've been so worried! So there's no point in giving the wood a soak til it can't take on more water?
I was going to go and get some Springtails and Isopods this weekend to put in there ready for next weekend, when I'm hoping to put the frogs in =]
Will the mould be harmful to the frogs if it is still there?
Soaking the wood won't do much for it. Best to just leave it be.
The bugs will be a great help. I like to give them 30 days to multiply as much as I can before I put the hunters in.
What kind if frogs are going in this tank? And no, the mold is not harmful in any way.

I see, thanks =]
Another 30 days? I've already left it two weeks!!! =[ I just want my frogs! Hah!
Most likely Bumblebee Leucs =]
Also, Chipmunk. Looking at your albums, your tank is SWEET!! How long til everything has that constantly wet look? My humidity is constantly over 80% but the branch dries quite quick, as does the water bath, the soil is damp to the touch, but not as moist as yours. Sorry for the questions =]
Thanksno worries about the questions, it's why we're here.
Some tanks have the wet look, some don't. I normally have a lot of water in my tanks, which helps. But if your water dish is evaporating quickly, you may want to make some adjustments. It should last a few days, easily.

Oh, the reason I asked what kind of frogs: plan on culturing springtails to seed the tank every now and again. The leucs will snack on them every chance they get, the springtails may not be able to reproduce fast enough.

Haha savage hunters! The water is definitely lasting a few days. Is RO water okay for the bath? Or should I use dechlorinated tap water?

Dechlorinated tap is better. Ro water has no minerals in it to replenish the frogs.
