Ok so I got my new little friend today, it is only about 1 in length and he hasn't burrowed into the substrate, made a mess of the little bit of water that was in the dish kicking the substrate every where though. The condensation on the tank is from the substrate, I used fresh made with treated water not what the lady at the store scooped into the tiny tub I brought him home in. I am hoping the "plant" in the tank will give him enough of a hiding place at least until he grows some and I can put him into the larger tank. Going to be setting up the larger one with the covering on the sides n back shortly. As soon as I can get some help with the therm/hygrometer that I bought from PetSmart which came without instructions and the not so helpful people on the phone had no clue on how to work it or what size battery to use. Hope this picture isn't too big

Hello and congratulations on your first frog!
He should feel ok, but if you really want him to feel safe, cover off the 3 sides of the tank with a nice jungle wallpaper, even cardboard does the job. But it will reduce his stress levels.
Eventhough there isn't a problem, since your a new owner, it wouldn't hurt to fill out the below questions. So we can give you advice if anything is missing or incorrect.
“Trouble in the Frog Enclosure”
The following information will be very helpful if provided when requesting assistance with either your frog or enclosure. To help with your questions, please utilize the below list and post the information in the proper forum area to get advice from FF members that keep the same frog. This will allow for little confusion and a faster more informed response.
1. Size of enclosure
2. # of inhabitants - specifically other frogs and size differences
3. Humidity
4. Temperature
5. Water - type - for both misting and soaking dish

7. Enclosure set up i.e. plants (live or artificial), wood, bark and other materials.
- How were things prepared prior to being put into the viv.
8. Main food source
9. Vitamins and calcium? (how often)
10. Lighting
11. What is being used to maintain the temperature of the enclosure
12. When is the last time he/she ate
13. Have you found poop lately
14. A pic would be helpful including frog and enclosure (any including cell phone pic is fine)
15. Describe frog's symptoms and/or recent physical changes; to include it's ventral/belly area.
16. How old is the frog
17. How long have you owned him/her
18. Is the frog wild caught or captive bred
19. Frog food- how often and if it is diverse, what other feeders are used as treats
20. How often the frog is handled
21. Is the enclosure kept in a high or low traffic area
22. Describe enclosure maintenance (water changes, cleaning, etc)
by Lynn(Flybyferns) and GrifTheGreat.
Ok everything seems fine though, he has burrowed in a bit and has his head above the substrate peeking out between the leaves of the plant. The room is a bit on the cool side I have one of those red heat bulb things set up near the carrier but without the temp gauge working I have it set a bit aways, I can put a room heater in there if needed that has a temp setting on it so he doesn't get too cold.

Sounds like everything is perfect! The digital gauges shouldn't be so hard, feel free to post a picture of it or the name on here, I'm sure someone will know it.
The ones I use I just have to put the battery in when I use it first and it automatically does everything for me. Just remember to attach both probes about 2 inches above the substrate.
Thanks
Its an All Living Things brand thermometer/hygrometer combo- digital from petsmart. Has a battery compartment for a watch battery.. but no code's to tell me exactly which size I would need. Nor was there any instructions on how to use it.. very frustrating. If I wouldn't have already opened the package I would have taken it back for a different brand.

How much was that digital Therm/Hydro?
I would return it and get either of the following. Even though it is opened return it and tell them there are no instructions and it sucks lol.
Amazon.com: Zoo Med HygroTherm Humidity and Temperature Controller: Pet Supplies
Amazon.com: Exo Terra Digital Combination Thermometer/Hygrometer: Pet Supplies
They are both super simple to setup and the one that isn't the Zoo Med Hydro Therm is super affordable.
lol yeah it was $20. they had that one and the zoo med one available, this one was the one that was affordable lol. they had the analog ones but heard they aren't too reliable so didn't want to waste the money only to buy another set in a month or so. You know when you call the customer service number listed on the packaging and they don't even have the basic info on it there is something wrong, will wait a day or so for them to find the info and call me back. If they don't then I will take it back, hopefully temps will be ok and will mist 2x a day until I get one that works. It may not be the best but I have the water dish to help etc.
I have one of these. They are fairly accurate. There should be a small piece of instructions with it, but I didn't read it. One button is for the mode settings and the other appears to be some sort of memory. It is a confusing device, but once you set it up it works well. Having two probes is also a good feature.
nope there was no instructions not even a piece of paper beyond the one they have that is green with the name on the one side and the features on the other, no battery size or anything, gonna go to the CVS this morning and take it with me, maybe some one there can help me pick out the right size battery then maybe just fiddle with it until I figure it out. If I still have issues then will just take it back n hope that Petco will have a better one or at least a better selection to chose from.
Edited for question:
On a different note.. do these guys change color a bit ? yesterday when I picked him up he was a really dark color almost a dark black/brown with just one or two areas of bright green on them, after I got him home and settled he lightened up a bit now today when I went to feed him he is a bit lighter in color no where near the dark dark color he was in the pet store.
and got him to eat 3 little crickets ( dusted ) using tongs, he picked up eating from them right away, I was the one having issues with grabbing the itty bitty crickets with em.

The enclosure you have now will be more than sufficient for the next 4 to 5 months.
your little one will grow quickly.
I would get a kitchen digital scale that can weigh in grams.
and weigh the frog every time you do a change of its substrate.
I used a small plastic container to hold my little pepito when I first got him.
he was a hoppy little thing and even liked to climb on things. He was really cute. Now a little over a year old he's a big bruiser and too big to hop, LOL
Keeping a eye on their weight is a good measure of health.
When your frog gets to 3 inches snout to vent (STV) them you can upgrade its living quarters.
welcome to the hobby.

I hate to say it but you might have better luck finding the correct battery at a radio shack.
As my pep grew he lost his bright green in favor of dark and light brown.
also mood and health will affect color.
your little one is still getting use to its new home and daily regimen. Sot it might be a little stressed. But the good feeding response is a good
sign that it is doing good.
Ok finally got the battery and got the gauge working..I think its working..the humidity reading was a bit crazy..was reading 99% but I think that was maybe because of where I had originally placed it, near the water dish and the tank was sprayed a few hours earlier and still had a bit of condensation on the back panel. The temp was very worrying, it was reading 73°F so I have the heater on and monitoring it to reach about 82 that should also help bring the humidity from 84%, where is was reading after moving it away from the bowl, down a bit lower. And if they are offered food but don't eat should I offer again a bit later or wait until the next day, he/she is probably really stressed right now as I have been messing around in the habitat with the gauges n trying to get the stuff moved around a bit better to give him a bit more hiding space.

Yes you have to be careful not to mist the sensor, It will make it malfunction.
if you do get it wet just take it out and take out the battery and use a hairdryer set to cold air and dry it out for at least 5 min. and put the battery back in
and check the read out.
placement of the sensors is critical.
I place the sensors on the opposite side of the tank from the heat source and in the middle from the bottom and top of the tank.
this way you will have a temp gradient 9a hot side and a cool side and it will allow the frog to choose the temp it likes.
thanks for the info, trying to figure this thing out still, finally figured out the right probs but when I moved them everything went haywire.. the humidity that was reading at almost 80% tanked out to under 30% when I moved it from one corner to the middle of the tank and the temp went from 82 down to 76 from just moving the probe about an inch..idk what is going on but will prob buy something else when I get my stipend next month and just keep this one as a temporary back up. I think I am going to try and put the probs in the larger tank and not the small one hes sitting in maybe that will help sort it out, no worry about accident spraying etc.
