hey so I want to get poison dart frogs but I don't know what a good species is to start with. Is there a species that can go in a 10 gallon tank? I've seen people on you tube keep dendrobate azures in 10 gallons in groups of 2 to 3. and are there any arboreal species that will be active ? because I have an extra exoterra 12x12x18 tank I would like to use for something.
Yes, Darts were kept in the past in 10G aquariums oriented vertically. Some probably still keep them that way. With the appearance of the larger ExoTerra's; an 18x18x24 is a much better enclosure, specially when considering a vivarium set-up to raise and breed a group.
Once you build a drain layer or false bottom and a back wall; the space in that 10G or the 12x12x18 in. ExoTerra will not appear that large anymore. Can't find link; but a recent build thread by a member had him expressing those thoughts.
If you have the smaller ExoTerra on hand and can't trade up; my recommendation is to keep interior build up to a minimum to prevent losing interior space to decor. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
