Hello, in my 5 gallon tank my drainage layer has flooded. Now before anyone thinks im keeping frogs in. 5 gal im not its a temporary tank for my 3 green tree frogs while their 20 vert is being constructed.anyways...my tanks drainage layer is flooded with water and it is slowly spilling out of the tankIm using gravel as a drainage layer and i was wondering for future builds does it matter if i use gravel or hydrotone? Will the water in the drainage layer evaporate? To avoid this problem for my 20 high i just siliconed the whole inside edges of the tank.thanks
To prevent overfilling the dead space or drainage layer, you need to have a way to remove the excess water. The simplest construction is to use a clear 1 in. diameter plastic tube similar to an under gravel filter lift tube. You install that vertically so it reaches the tank bottom. Insert tube into a piece of foam (to prevent it from clogging) and then it goes into dead space or your drainage layer goes on top. When you see the water level rising, can insert and aquarium air hose or similar into the tube and using suction/gravity, remove the excess water.
The other way requires drilling a hole (use glass shop if do not know how) at bottom glass pane (if not tempered) or lower area of a side pane. Then you install an aquarium bulkhead with valve and tubing so you can drain water as it level rises. If you search YouTube for "installing aquarium bulkhead" should find a few videos on procedure.
What are you using for an enclosure? Aquariums should not leak and even turtle or reptile enclosures should be able to hold a few inches of water. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
Thanks Carlos. So can i get a PVC tube and a cap and stick it into the drainage layer before building and so when ever i need the water out i can pop of the cap and siphon it out?Im using a tank that is 14x8x10 that i got from lllreptile,i thought it can hold water but i guess not. Also ive been reading about making a pond that connects to the drainage layer so whenever the drainage layer fills up i can just siphon it out?How does that work?
A PVC tube will work too; just remember it needs to reach all the way to the bottom and myself would drill a few holes around it, to the height of tank's drainage layer. A sponge around it will help prevent holes from clogging.
Not sure understand about the pond set-up you describe, unless it's something like this: Frog Forum - Building Dart Frog Terrariums / Tropical Terrarium Construction. If so, that will work too; but only in a non-leaking tank.
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
Yes justlike that.Im planning on doing this all on my 20h vert(waiting on the junglebox vert kit)do you think it will be easier just to go with the PVC method or with the pond like in the link that you posted?btw do you happen to know how long junglebox takes to ship their kits?i ordered mine on Thursday:/
